Culpepper visits with Bucs

Do the Bucs really need another quarterback? In the eyes of Jon Gruden they must. They acquired Jeff Garcia who is the front runner to start and Jake Plummer who is currently retired. Now they are looking at the recently released Daunte Culpepper to come in and compete for a starting role. Culpepper is his own agent and is now looking for teams that will give him the best chance to start for the right price. If the Bucs do get Culpepper it could be trouble for either Chris Simms who is coming off a ruptured spleen and Bruce Gradkowski who was unimpressive in the starts he got.

Looks like their strategy is to stockpile aging mediocre QBs. Quantity is not a substitute for quality.

Mediocre QBs? I hope your not talking about the two time Pro-Bowler. Did you see the playoff game the Garcia supposedly lost? That was the most gutty performance I've seen by a QB in quite a while. I thought for sure they'd carry him off on a stretcher. But he got back up. Glad the Eagles wanted to go with the vomiting wonder, I'm a Buc fan!

I agree that Garcia is tough as nails. Maybe he's a "system guy" who looked great in SF and had a fine run in Philly. Then again he failed in Cleveland and was a turnover machine in Detroit. Perhaps it was the o-lines but it sure was painful to watch. He's a Gruden, west coast guy and will probably do fine in that setting but given his age and the state of the Bucs it's hard to build around him. And as for toughness, let's not forget Simms getting beaten like a pinata and playing with a ruptured spleen. The guy almost died on the field and Chuckie rewards him by taking away his starting position.

I think Gruden is trying to get a bunch of QB's who are pretty good and try to take the parts and make a Super-QB.

Daunte's cannon
Simms' youth
Plummer's...?
Gradkowski's accuracy (most accurate QB in NCAA history)
Garcia's legs,guts.(and girlfriend)

Plummer's porn stache.

Gruden likes quarterbacks as we can tell, but they can only play one at a time. It will take up roster space and cap room, unless Culpepper takes a cheap contract.

It's all about securing the future at this position. Garcia is still competitive but being an older QB he's limited. What if he struggles this season and they're making a playoff run? Who will Gruden turn to then? Not Simms, Gradkowski, or anybody else for that matter. Not a bad idea for the Bucs. They'll sign him in a minute, he'll sit on the bench this season while he still rehabs that knee and he'll be strong as hell come 2008.

Memo to Coach Gruden; this iosn't fantasy football 101, you can not stock pile players and expect to win nor expect to trade later. Stick with what you have. I do like Culp, think he will be a very good quarterback, again, once his knee heals, but good golley Miss Molly!
