Eagles Training Camp Preview: RB

When you look at the depth the Eagles have at RB it looks amazing in my mind. You have Brian Westbrook who is probably the most complete back in the game, behind him is Correll Buckhalter who averaged 5.0 YPC which is great for a back up running back who has fully recovered from a devastating knee injury. Now when you look at the third and the 4th string it's very interesting, you have Lorenzo Booker and Tony Hunt.

Booker was a back that the Eagles wanted to draft last year when he came out of college but was taken early by the Miami Dolphins which resulted in the Eagles drafting Tony Hunt. Well this year the Eagles were able to acquire the player they had their eye on for some time via trade. With his addition to this offense he brings the same attributes as Westbrook would, speed, the ability to line up as a wr, and coming out of the the backfield for screens etc. Having Booker and Westbrook on the field at once brings a lot of speed and confusion towards opposing defenses.

Now we look at the other side and see Tony Hunt, a big back who has a bruising style of running. He had a tough rookie year, he struggled to pick up the techniques that every good running back should have, one of which was blocking. I know many Eagles fans wondered why Hunt did not get much playing time however eagles fans, in the NFL world you have to EARN playing time! Running wise he reminds me of Buckhalter, runs tall and pounds defenses he does not do a juke move on you he just trucks you and he has potential. I give him a lot of credit coming into mini camp this year and playing well. He looked great out there and his time will come soon, I just feel he needs to be patient and watch from the sidelines for some time.

A running back who has been fairly quiet this mini camp but nonetheless working hard is Ryan Moats. Moats was a player who showed a lot of promise in the horrific 2005 season however, due to injuries he just never saw the field and ultimately could not put it all together. Now it's going to be very tough for him to make the team, he is the dark horse make no mistake about it.

Here is how I see the depth chart for RB:

1. Brian Westbook

2. Correll Buckhalter

3. Lorenzo Booker

4. Tony Hunt

( Ryan Moats cut)

Brian Westbrook is one of the best players in football and is the main reason why I will watch an Eagles game. How come he gets no ink from Philly fans? Everything on this site is Donovan McNabb. Westbrook is your mvp from what I've seen and nothing is ever posted about the guy.

no one ever mentions him because we all know that and its no debate. there are people who disagree with mcnabb's greatness, but NONE who denounce Westbrook's.

He must do something off the field that is worthy to get in the yard.

jason2, why be such a hater? Westbrook gets plenty of props on here. We all know he's the team MVP. No argument. But Donovan is the QB ,he's the one with the story,ya know.

The city of Philadelphia does not forget players who sacrifice for the team.
In Philadelphia players like Aaron Rowand ran into the wall for the Phillies.
Westbrook downed a ball rather than scored a touchdown to run the clock.

We remember the ones who wouldn't work for us.

Ricky Watters, Terrell Owens

We definitely acknowledge Westbrook's greatness, we simply don't address him as a problem in any regards to the franchise or city. Philadelphia sports writers don't make headlines with Westbrook doing charity, it's about who is getting cut, or moving in the ranks.

As far as the fans recognition of Westbrook's on and off-field contribution to the franchise is definitely understood.

The eagles backfield is set, only if they use them right!!!line up in two set back and run the ball, they have o-line to do that--even runyan and tra wants it,between the tackles----

I keep hearing everyone refer to Tony Hunt as a big back, the guy is only 6'1" and 227lbs. You would think they were talking about Jerome Bettis or Christian Okoye. He's far from a true big back. In fact no one is sure just what he is yet, except a rookie who couldn't get on the field.

Well he's not a fast back and he does not run like Barry and he sure is not elusive so I reached to the conclusion as many Eagles fans that he is a bruising back. He is a guy who will go up the middle and take a pounding and attempt to pound others, last time I checked thats a big back.

Ursportspro, what would you classify Hunt as? at 6'1", 227, and the speed of a snail, he's hardly the speed/scat back westbrook, Moats, and Booker are.

I'd classify him as a back who rushed for 16yrds on 10 carries. I think of a Brandon Jacobs type when I think of big backs. Hunt's only 10 lbs heavier than Buckhalter....

Remember how many backs are as big as Brandon Jacobs? I can think maybe 2 (Steven Jackson and Larry Johnson, and you can make a case for AP maybe) Your either a speedy back, Situational back or a big back.

I think Booker is going to be higher on the depth chart than Buck. I hope not, just because Buck is/was a beast when healthy. But it may be the end of the road for him. going into season 8 and add 2 more years just because of those knees. His shelf life may be all used up. We'll see...

Buck and booker will be different backs. Buck will give westbrook a breather when he needs it. Booker is going to get on the field with Westbrook throughout the game as a situational guy, most likely 3rd downs. So the depth chart is not going to neccesarily determine which plays and which does not.
As far as Hunt goes, I don't see him getting much playing time, he will have his work cut-out for him.

Although I do beleive this is Buck's final year, he will get on the field just as he did last year.

Booker and B West (our best player) will be an INSANE backfield....can u imagine those 2 with kevin curtis and desean all linng up? If desaun can play like i think he will, how can anyone stop that?

I'm with you baby...That's what i'm talking about !!!
