It’s about halfway through the regular season for most fantasy football leagues, and everyone is looking to upgrade teams. Here are some guys that I think you should sell high on, (trade away), and buy low on (trade for):
Sell High:
Eli Manning
If you can get any good value for him, do so. After a hot start, we’ve seen Eli drop off in the past couple of weeks, and this will definitely continue. A pattern has developed with Eli in his career as he always has good starts but dramatically drops in production in the second half of the season as the weather gets worse. His upcoming schedule is also very tough: the last four out of the five defenses he faces are in the top ten in passing defense.
Guys I would trade him for: Kyle Orton, Carson Palmer, Jay Cutler, Brett Favre
Matt Forte and LaDainian Tomlinson
I’m putting these guys together because they are pretty much in the same boat. Neither of them has been producing all year, but each had great games last week and you might find an owner buying a second-half resurgence. Neither have great upcoming schedules, so I don’t see this happening. If you can get #2 running back value for them, do the deal.
Guys I would trade them for: Ryan Grant, Pierre Thomas, Marion Barber, Brandon Jacobs
Steve Smith (Giants)
As Eli Manning goes, so will Steve Smith. This early season monster has cooled off as when Eli did, and I don’t see him returning to anywhere near his breakout numbers. In addition, the Giants now have too many options for one to shine, and Smith did most of his damage while Hakeem Nicks was injured.
Guys I would trade him for: Sidney Rice, Nate Burleson, Jerricho Cotchery, Mike Sims- Walker
Tony Romo
Labeled a bust earlier in the season, Romo has had a resurgence after the bye week with good games against Seattle and Atlanta. I still think he’s a bust for the rest of the season. All of the teams he has scored well against have bad pass defenses, and Romo has been terrible against competent defenses. He also has a very tough upcoming schedule, with every team he is facing in the top half of the league in pass defense. Also, teams will not be so surprised by breakout Miles Austin, limiting the big passing plays.
Guys I would trade him for: Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Kurt Warner, Donovan McNabb, Brett Favre, Jay Cutler
Buy Low:
Kurt Warner
Warner has not performed very well so far, but I think he will bounce back in the second half of the season. The main reason for this is his ridiculously easy schedule coming up: only one of his next eight opponents ranks in the top half in passing yards allowed. If someone is bailing because of his five interception game last weekend, make a deal.
Guys I would trade for him: Matt Ryan, Tony Romo, Joe Flacco, Donovan McNabb
Pierre Thomas
His value will go up because of his two touchdown game last week, but if you can still trade for him, I would do it. Owners could be worried about Mike Bell stealing carries and goal-line touches, but I think Thomas will get the ball enough moving forward. He also has an extremely easy upcoming schedule: he faces no top ten rushing defenses and seven bottom ten rushing defenses.
Guys I would trade for him: Ryan Grant, Matt Forte, LaDanian Tomlinson, Brian Westbrook, Marian Barber, Brandon Jacobs
Calvin Johnson
Megatron has been injured for four weeks, and owners could be worried that the injury is more serious, or might need production now and do not want to wait. I think he gets back soon and bounces back into the top talent he was projected to be.
Guys I would trade for him: Brandon Marshall, Chad Ochocinco, Roddy White, DeSean Jackson, Randy Moss
Steve Slaton
After the Ryan Moats debacle last week, it shouldn’t be hard to find panicky owners to prey on for Steve Slaton. He might take some sort of hit in value, but I do not think it is as drastic as some others believe. He is an extremely talented, explosive back who will not be kept off the field, and when he is on the field he’ll put up numbers.
Guys I would trade for him: LaDanian Tomlinson, Clinton Portis, Knowshon Moreno, Joseph Addai
