Fbkid's top ten shocking predictions for the NFL season

During the course of the NFL season, many unexpected things happen; from players breaking out, to teams who were Super Bowl favorites not making the playoffs So I thought it would be fitting if I continue my lists with my top ten shocking predictions of the 2008 NFL season.

1. Troy Smith will be the starting quarterback for the Ravens week one: Many people would expect Kyle Boller or possibly Joe Flacco to be starting for the Ravens, but they may have forgotten about Smith. The former Heisman trophy winner last year looked good in limited playing time and so far the team is really impressed with what they have seen in mini camp. Flacco could be the long term answer for the Ravens, but don't be surprised if Smith starts for the next year or two.

2. The Cowboys won't be representing the NFC in the Super Bowl: For the last two years, many people have been saying that the Cowboys are the team to beat in the NFC. But come playoff time, they don't beat anyone. This team has loads of talent but for this team to succeed, ego's can't be colliding in the locker room and the odds of that happening aren't very good.

3. The Pittsburgh Steelers won't make the playoffs: Many people think the Steelers are going to win the AFC North again but if you look inside the numbers, the odds aren't very good. The Steelers have the highest strength of schedule in the league and their offensive line had lots of issues last year and the loss of Alan Faneca won't help. Looking at that, the Browns are the best bet to win this division.

4. The Buffalo Bills will make the playoffs: The Bills had a solid year last year at 7-9 but this year, they can be even better. They now have a clear choice at quarterback in Trent Edwards as well as an every down back in Marshawn Lynch. The receiving corps also improved as the team drafted 6'6 James Hardy in the second round. The defense is also improving as Paul Posluszny will be healthy and Leodis McKelvin should improve the secondary and the return game. Plus they don't have the strongest division. Other than the Patriots, they play the Dolphins and Jets a combined 4 times. If they play .500 football the rest of the year, the Bills would have a 10-6 record which should be good for a wildcard birth in the AFC.

5. Jonathan Stewart will win offensive rookie of the year: Most people say that Darren McFadden will be the clear choice for rookie of the year honors. But Lane Kiffin already came out and said that he will be using him in a Reggie Bush type role. Stewart is most likely going to be the feature back in Carolina as DeAngelo Williams hasn't proved he's able to carry the ball 20 times a game. Stewart has fresh legs as he wasn't used that much in college so he should see lots of carries this season and could bring a ground game the Panthers haven't had in a while. Speaking of the Panthers...

6. The Carolina Panthers will make the playoffs: The NFC South is a weird division. Every single year, a different team wins it. This year could be the Panthers turn. Jake Delhomme was having a great season until it got cut short by Tommy John Surgery. If his great play carries over, the Panthers are in good shape. Plus they have one of the best receivers in the league in Steve Smith for Delhomme to throw to. If Julius Peppers and the rest of the defense improves, this team could be dangerous in the NFC.

7. The Oakland Raiders will be a playoff spoiler come December: This offseason, the Raiders did a very good job of getting talent through free agency and the draft. JaMarcus Russell now has a full year of the offense under his belt and the defense is much improved with the additions of DeAngelo Hall and Gibril Wilson. The Raiders may not start off that great as they have lots of new players adjusting, but by the end of the year, they can stop some teams from making the playoffs and possibly be a 7 or 8 win team.

8. Keith Rivers will win defensive rookie of the year: Like Patrick Willis last year, Rivers has the chance to step in right away and be the leader of a defense. The Bengals have gotten some young defensive talent in the draft the last couple of years and now with the addition of Rivers, they are headed in the right direction.

9. Drew Stanton will be the starting quarterback for the Lions by the end of the year: If Stanton didn't have a season ending knee injury in preseason last year, there was a good chance he could have been starting as a rookie. But Jon Kitna is now 35 and isn't the long term answer. The only problem with Stanton is Mike Martz was spending the preseason last year changing Stanton's mechanics. Now he's gone and he will now have two different offensive coordinators in two years. But if the Lions are going to struggle, there isn't a better time to start the Stanton to Calvin Johnson connection.

10. Matt Forte will run for 1,000 yards as a rookie: With the release of Cedric Benson, the Bears think they have found the bruising back they were looking for in Forte. Forte should be the feature back for the Bears and with the weak passing game, will be the focal point of opposing defenses. His running style is perfect for the cold games in December.

They are pretty sound predictions if you really look at the only one I don't like is number 6 I think delholm is done and I am an eagles fan so I also don't want it 2 happen but I could be wrong good read though.
Tank

Delhomme is going to be hit or miss. He's either going to be great or lose most of his accuracy. We have never seen a quarterback come back from Tommie John Surgery before so we don't know what to expect. I think most Eagles fans like yourself will be following this situation closely as you could be getting a top 10 pick if Delhomme isn't fully recovered.

I definitely agree with #1... but you knew that. Good call on Rivers in Cincy. They'll be in a lot of shootouts, so he'll have the chance to put up good stats. How's this for crazy? The Raiders might make a run for the playoffs. Long shot... probably more so than the Browns, who I agree have a great shot to win the AFC North. Could also be the Steelers, though. Definitely not Baltimore or Cincy, though.

I don't get why nobody is talking about Smith though. He played well in the few games he played last year. I guess the National Championship game is what still comes to mind when most people think of him.

Yeah, if he and the Buckeyes didn't tank in that championship game, he would have been a first-round pick.

Solid work.
What about " Favre returns"? Then again, nobody would find that shocking.

egos don't collide in the dallas lockerroom so they'll be fine when it comes playoff time this yr

well on number 3 theres going to be a battle between bengals and steelers, the browns i think arent still good enough but yes if quater back can do good its possible and runnng back is still healthy, but(not because im a bengals fan)i still belive bengals go 12-4 and go to playoffs, there defense is begining to form under new coach mike zimmerman, and they still got the old rudi johnson,he put on more weight this year to be a power back.they still have chad and hopefully chemistery in team does good

The bengals are much more likely to go 4-12.

I like the Troy Smith prediction, everyone dogs on him based on his size but he has the mobility needed to avoid the sack and if I remember has a pretty good arm.

Thank God someone else in the world realizes that the Cowboys are a glorified Laker's team.

I agree with pretty much all of these. EXCEPT offensive rookie of the year will be, get this... Chris Johnson of the Titans. Hes the fastest running back ive ever seen and will be great for vince young to get the ball off to with screens and swing passes which i think he will turn into a lot of yards. If you havent seen this guys college highlights, i suggest checking them out. The notion that hes not going to make anyone miss is horse crap. This guy has a lot of upside and he will flat beat anyone in the league in a footrace. Stewart will be great though. I thought that was a great pick for/by the panthers.
INteresting fact abouth the NFC South.... The team that has come in last in the division has won it the next year for the last 5 or six years. Hmmm, Matt Ryan rookie of the year??? Highly unlikey, but hey, were talking about sports here.
Also, be careful about the Bills prediction. Lynch and Hardy could both be in Jail come start of the season for that hit and run case. God knows i hope they arent, but you never know.
WORD

Great predicition on Chris Johnson. I'm very high on him also. He will also probably handle the kick returns as well. He could possibly lead all rookies in total yards from scrimmage this upcoming season.

Running back that grew up in Florida, from a small school, a man with dreads... mark this guy up for the next mini-LT. I'll go out on a limb, better than Reggie Bush.

But better then Reggie Bush isn't saying that much. He compares himself to Brian Westbrook and if he stays healthy, I think it could happen.

Considering the hype Bush had/has I would say it's saying a bit... not a lot, but something.

Runningbacks are so hard to figure out for the NFL. The Bears along with everyone else thought Cedric Benson was going to be that "bruising back" as well.

Ben Worthlessburger is the most overrated quaterback in the NFL.

I have to diagree with this comment. For the record I am a Raider fan. If you put any other quarterback behind his line and they will lead the league in sacks given up. Big Ben reminds me of Elway the way he can keep a play alive. There is a reason he had the second best qb rating in 2007(only behind Tom Brady). He is a big time stud.

your right Steve, I'd take Roethlisberger any day.

Like the troy smith prediction, thought he played very well from what I saw last year. Matt Forte is about a lock to run for 1,000 yards. Of course Dallas will again win the division, and blow one in the first round, which is fine by me, eagles can soar under the radar and maybe get to the bowl. I do think the steelers will make the cut even with a tough schedule, but again they too will blow one in the first round.
However I don't see the Panthers getting in, it should be a race between the Saints and the Bucs still, which is a funny statement, neither are very threatening. I also don't think the Bills will get in the playoffs, still very young, may 2010.

oh, and i think matt forte gets rookie of the year, no quarterback means keep it on the ground, he may have 12 td's by the end of the season who knows.

Nice list Fbkid....The Panthers WILL NOT make the playoffs though. If they were to, that would be the most shocking thing on that list

Yea...that might have you digging hard dudes again hahaha

you bastard

Sorry man I couldnt resist

i disagree with many but its a good list
1-just cuz the steelers dont win the division doesnt mean they wont make the playoffs...i think they finish with double digit wins and i think they do win the divison...but if they dont theyll be a wildcard team
2-panthers wont make playoffs..if they do im gonna be so mad that they decide to be good when the eagles have their draft pick
3-i think rivers is a very good choice but i like gholston to win DROY but u could be right he is very good

thats basically it...i hope desean jackson wins OROY but thats just cuz im an eagles fan

I don't know about the Steelers though, if they don't win the division it would be tough to get in the playoffs in the AFC. The playoff teams would be the four division winners which is most likely Chargers, Patriots, Colts and Browns. Then the Jaguars will have one of the wildcard spots and I have the Bills making the last spot in the AFC so I don't think there is enough room for them to make it.

i have a tough time seeing the bills outplaying the steelers

Well the Steelers don't play the Dolphins and Jets a combined 4 times either. The Steelers have the highest strength of schedule in the league.

Very true fbkid15...their schedule is BRUTAL. They're gonna have one of hte best rushing attacks in the league this year which will only help out Ben/Hines. They got the 2 biggest steals of the draft in Mendenhall and Sweed...expect both to be huge. I like hte Steelers chances to make the playoffs this year...they're not missing much with Faneca gone. They know when to gid rid of players.

as long as the steelers have a defense somewhere near their #1 ranked D last year... they are a lock to make the playoffs.

the houston texans will shock the afc this year. put that on your list.

In that division? 9-7 10-6 at best.

i think a houston fan would be more than happy with 10-6 at this point.

true. i'm just saying that i wouldn't be shocked if they went 10-6

they were starting to come on down the stretch last year. with a little luck, they could make a playoff run. depends on if shaub is the real deal.

Matt looks good to me, just hope he can stay healthy. Rosenfels is pretty good anyway.

+1 for being one of the few people observant enough to notice that the Bills are going to be playoff material for once...

Gotta love the Bills.

especially with Marshawn and Roscoe......great names
