Flacco, Fabian and Troy Smith

As a Baltimore fan, anytime you hear the words "arm strength" and "upside," your mind heads straight for Kyle Boller, which is why I can't say that I'm thrilled with Joe Flacco. Even if he pans out, trading up to #18 was a stretch. Baltimore probably could have bypassed Flacco at #26 even, and then waited until he dropped to them at the top of the second. Even then, I think it would have been a stretch.

I had hoped Baltimore would take a corner in the first round, but instead it's former first-round selection CB Fabian Washington, who played under Rex Ryan's twin brother Rob in Oakland: "They sound alike, they look alike, other than the haircut, and they say the same jokes. Everything's the same, so you feel like you went out of one office and right back in the same office."

Washington ran a 4.29/40 in 2005, making him the fastest player clocked during that year's NFL Combine. He'll pair up nicely with Chris McAlister, but he needs to be a better tackler, which is why Oakland benched him last year after the Broncos game. He became expendable as soon as the Raiders scooped up DeAngelo Hall in the offseason. Then in February, Washington was arrested for a scuffle with his girlfriend. He took responsibility for the offseason incident, apologized, and will avoid prosecution if he stays out of trouble for long enough. It sounds like maybe this guy just needed a change of scenery. If he plays like a former first-round selection, and all we gave up was a fourth-round pick, that's a good deal. Still, I wish the Ravens would have picked up more support in the defensive backfield. They chose a couple of safeties on day two, but those guys are special-teamers, not starters.

There hasn't been much word on QB Troy Smith, who played well in limited action last year. It seems that the front office is content to let Smith, Boller and Flacco battle it out for the starting job, though my guess is that Boller gets the starting nod. If that's the case, chances are Smith will drop to #3 on the depth chart, which would be a shame. Smith has potential, but he may never get a fair shot because the front office is in love with Flacco. We never gave Derek Anderson a chance to perform, and look at what he's doing now in Cleveland. Since we already know Boller is a career backup, my vote is to let Smith be the starter, plant Flacco on the bench, and let Boller do what he does best, which is stay out of the way and play only when needed.

I agree Dewey I think that Smith isn't getting much of a shot even though the time he played he looked very good. To me the best scenerio for the Ravens in the draft would have been to take Mike Jenkins at 26, then take Flacco in the 2nd round. Then that would be a very good draft.

Yeah, I would have preferred Mike Jenkins at #26. That would have been great.

they just might do that, let them battle it out for the starter spot. i don't see flacco starting, do i think he's good yes, but no starter yet. BTW this last line is pretty classic lol!!

Boller do what he does best, which is stay out of the way and play only when needed.

Boller may be a career back-up but he gives them the best shot to win right now. Troy is just 2 small to ever be a good QB, so Boller should play unitl Flacco gets the nod, when the Ravens playoff chances are shot anyway. The the HUGE Flacco will eventually be a good QB.

I love that the Ravens got a CB that has experience. Hopefully he can make strides more quickly than a draft pick.

I honestly believe Troy Smith should be the starter out of the gate and here's why: I think everyone on the Ravens staff agrees Kyle Boller is not the answer as our quarterback, and he's clearly not a winner. So why whould we let him hold the reins as we wait for Flacco? Move Boller to backup, no matter what, and let Smith and Flacco battle, and hopefully Smith can beat out Flacco and let him sit for awhile. It's clear to me that Smith and Boller aren't going to be around in Baltimore much longer, but why not give the unknown quantity a chance over someone who we know can't perform past training camp?

I'm all about Troy Smith. 100% let him start.

Why would they try and groom smith, when they just got a rookie, that they want to start very soon. Kyle Boller is the best QB on their roster right now period. Smith only played last year, cuz their season was hopeless. Same situation this year. Boller starts, when their playoff chances are gone, they send in Flacco.

no one's trying to groom smith, just give him a chance. we all know boller stinks is my basic point.

i know, but putting smith as the starter, would set the team back, he needs time to develop. Why wouldn't they place VETERAN Boller, with experience in, and then place Flacco in while he is ready. Puttin gin Smith and then Flacco, is like giving the job to a rookie, then pulling him, and putting in another rookie. Sure if SOMEHOW smith beats out Boller in training camp, he should be given the job. But as is Boller is the best QB (right now), on the roster.

Troy will WIN the job. He's got too much to lose. I have a lot of faith in him.

Dewey,
I am bummed I didnt get to meet you when I visited the YB offices a couple weeks back. I enthusiastically share your sentiment on Troy. Below is a recent article and interview I had with him. Hopefully he is given a fair shot to earn the starting role

That's too bad we missed each other. I have a bad feeling Troy won't get a fair shake this year. Or any year in Baltimore. They're high as a kite on Joe Flacco. They say publicly that it's an even race, but privately you've got to remind yourself that they were very aggressive in their pursuits to trade down and then back up... all with Flacco in mind. He's their guy. It's a shame, because had Derrick Harvey not destroyed Ohio State in that title game, Troy Smith would have been a first-rounder, and everyone would be up in arms about him being on the bench.

I like troy smith and think he'll end up being a real player n league

Looks like we've started a little Troy Smith fan club here. Good stuff. Ozzie, if you're reading this...

Everyone seems to be counting out Troy. Heisman type guy who didn't have a shot out of the gate. He came out last year briefly, and played well from what i saw. But since before the draft, they had said 'he won't translate well in the NFL'.

Those QB rankings look about right. How cool would it be if Troy Smith is the starter and Chad Henne gets the nod for Miami. It would renew the Mich-OSU rivalry in the pros as dueling QB's.

And even if Flacco gets the nod, you have Henne from Real Michigan vs. Flacco from Fake Michigan.

troy smith should be given a fair shot which i think he will. he put up better numbers than drew brees did his rookie, brees is another QB 6'0 or under, so that's y i compare the 2. but honestly, i truly believe FLacco, will just be a wasted pick, and it will be like college for him all over again, he will eventually just fade away.

I like flacco in two years--he will be a pro bowl caliber qb----troy smith has arm strength problems---watch in 08 season baltimore,he will scare db's in the long ball--flacco makes all the throws---jim harbaugh will be playing flacco--

Troy Smith also has height problems, you have to be taller then that to be successful at QB. Boller will start with Flacco coming in halfway through the season.

Boller's height doesn't mean anything - he just stinks. Can we just admit that? All I'm saying is let's give Smith a chance to prove he's better than Boller instead of just giving Boller the job because he's taller.

Arm strength doesn't matter in Baltimore, where they have roughly zero options who can stretch the field.

I forgot height problems RHCP879---RIGHT ON TROY SMITH CAN'T READ COMPLEX DEFENSE SCHEMES,ALA PITTSBURGH STEELERS---DICK LABEAU IS A MAD SCIENTIST WITH HIS PACKAGES EACH SUNDAY-- ALONG WITH JIM JOHNSON WITH EAGLES---ALA JOHN SPAGNOLA WITH GIANTS A PRODIGE!!!!

drew brees is the same size as troy smith
