Never, EVER have I wanted to scream "grow up" at a 60-year-old man more than I do today. I'm sure that by now everyone has had a chance to see Eugene "Mercury" Morris's recent interview, where he eloquently articulates his sophisticated, unbiased thoughts on the undefeated 2007 New England Patriots... Now hear me biotch about it.
15 Comments:
  • Mecury, the winning percentage of your opponents was below .400... lest we forget.
  • That is one giant douche.
  • Ok..I'm not the only one, who finds this guy irritating. Grow up, is right!!
  • funny, I've never actually seen a douche bag before, and honestly I was fine with that
  • Now, Biotch girly, I almost always agree with your biotching. But I am kinda with the ol' turd. As beaten down as I am by that infernal Dolphins' team, which is in no way even close to the greatest team ever in my humble and very biased estimation, their record notwithstanding, I am just as beaten by the inevitable speculation that begins every year when a team starts 7-0 or better. The Pats really are only half way there, and there is many a slip between the cup and the lip, so we will see.

Besides, that was a damn good analogy the old coot used. At least you can understand what he says. Maybe give him Sterling Sharpe's job. You'd get hot sports opinions, lucidity, and words you can cipher.
  • Hmm, I fully agree that that Pats have a long way to go (even says so in my article). All the premature speculation IS annoying, but that's just not the point here.

The old man's gotta at least show a LITTLE class in this situation (a la Hank Aaron a couple of months ago). It's really not hard to say something mature and respectful along the lines of "Look, they're not even halfway to our record, and I don't think they'll make it. But they're a good team, and I congratulate them on their success." That's it! You can let them know that you don't think they'll ever be as good as you, but without being a giant douche about it.
  • You're right. He could have been more gracious...and classy. I'll give you that...which means I am doing a 180 and agreeing with your entire premise (which I pretty much ignored so I could make my point, as you so aptly point out.) So I will just stick to my guns that I may not like what he said or the arrogance behind it, but I did enjoy his ability to communicate his thoughts. Way too many athletes and former athletes either a) regurgitate cliches they don't have to think about or really even mean, or b) fail to communicate anything that is remotely intelligible.

    Calfrope! You win.
  • Nice Douche pic!
  • shit, he's the new Richard Pryor, his was right on the mark. So let's not kick the AARP peeps when they're trying to hold on to a little moment of glory -- and I am not talking about the speedball with hookers in Houston incident.
  • Don't knock coke trafficking until you've tried it.
  • Is this the voice of reason...or experience, my good Fly Master?
  • First of all your right about him feeling scorned about the Patriots chance of matching their undefeated season. However, every year around this time or earlier usually, they track these gentlement down to ask them the same damn question about their 1972 season. They always give us the same lines, and yes it's been said many times that this group is extremely sour about the idea of losing their solidary moment in history. In their defense, most of these men who are well into their 60's and 70's aren't getting any younger and I'm sure their disdane for the new generation grows with each new wrinkle. A lot of these guys also had real jobs after their season was over, and carry a lot of envy or rather jealousy towards the younger instant multi-millionaire athletes that play today. Unfortunately, the younger athletes themselves don't take the time to study the history of the game or pay homage to the older generation either. I think it works both ways. I wouldn't attack him being for being a drug trafficker after he served his time and turned his life around to help motivate other people with his time. It's very noble. Although his comments sounded like a angry Old Man Simpson.
  • It was the voice of reason...The FlyMaster's nostrils are as clean as a newborn
  • The rant was funny at first, then I was like wow, kind of a hater. It makes a whole lot more sense now that I know he's used coke. But really, someone tell me what the hell he was talking about when he said, "I'll be dressed up in my tuxedo waitin on my bride". Lost me there.

Quick ThoughtZ

I think Tito Francona got screwed out of the AL Manager of the Year award. - I think I hate bye weeks in the NFL. It stunk not having the Patriots game to look forward to over the weekend. - Three night games in row for the Pats is also a little crazy. I can't stay up that late three weeks in a row. No way. - I think I am actually interested in the Celtics for a first time in a ...

Seriously, folks, did Simmons just write what I thought I read he wrote? If I didn't know any better, I'd swear he was calling himself out.
