The focus at Jets training camp has been the battle between Chad Pennington, Kellen Clemens and Brett Favre's ghost for the starting quarterback spot. The reasons behind the quarterback competition (and trying to acquire Favre) are obvious. Clemens and Pennington combined for 15 touchdowns and 19 interceptions last season, the offense averaged 16 points a game and most importantly, the team posted a 4-12 record. With numbers like those, the quarterback position is going to be scrutinized. But, when you finish a NFL season with 4 wins, it means your team has plenty of holes. The Jets are no different. As bad as the Jets quarterback play was, their offensive line was worse. The Jets rushed for a paltry 3.8 yards per carry and gave up 53 sacks. General manager Mike Tannenbaum addressed the woeful line, signing Pro-Bowl left guard Alan Faneca and veteran offensive lineman Damien Woody, who is expected to play right tackle. Are those players upgrades over the revolving door of left guards and right tackles that played last season? Yes, but Faneca's age and Woody's lack of experience at tackle along with the lack of depth along the line, are definite concerns. The defensive side of the ball has questions to answer as well. While the Jets dropped major coin improving the front seven through free agency and the draft, the secondary is at best, a work in progress. Kerry Rhodes and Darrelle Rivas are entrenched as starters at safety and corner respectively. However the candidates to fill out the rest of the defensive backfield are far from awe inspiring. The names that will compete for playing time in the secondary include: Justin Miller, David Barrett, Hank Poteat, Andre Woolfolk, Abram Elam, Eric Smith and Artrell Hawkins. When you combine those players with the lack of a top-tier pass-rusher, the Jets pass defense does not strike fear in the hearts of quarterbacks around the NFL. So while quarterback competitions always get the headlines, the Jets have work to do in other areas. Otherwise, Joe Willie Namath in is prime could be under center, and the Jets will still be a 4-12 team.

Purdue 2008: Tiller On A Treadmill

The Story If you had told Joe Tiller in 1997 that he would be shuffling off this Big Ten coil before the conference's other patriarch named Joe, he probably would have been surprised. "You traveled back in time to tell me that?" he'd ask. "What the hell is wrong with you? Don't you have family members to warn or large New York buildings to save or something...

No News Is Good News

Well in most cases, this is not what most fans want to hear, but when it comes to training camp this is great. There have been no lingering injuries to anyone, knock on wood that this continues, the position battles are only at the 3rd WR spot, and the 4th and 5th CB spots, and no one has held out. So what's the point your asking yourself, well try and think of the last team...

Why I Might Be Kind of Against the Jets Getting Brett Favre

I'm anticipating the Jets losing the Favre sweepstakes. I just don't see Mangini and Tannenbaum making such a huge move when they have so much on the line in the upcoming season (their jobs). I don't see Woody Johnson writing such a huge check either. I have a deal with my subconscious. As long as I don't try to interfere I'm allowed to identify my defense...

WFAN's Craig Carton's Campaign for the Jets to Get Brett

Video at HHR. Much to his co-host Boomer Esiason's lament, former Jersey Guy Craig Carton (accompanied by producer and one-time Ron & Fez lackey, Al Dukes) proceeded with his megaphone-enhanced "Let's Get Brett [Favre]" crusade at Jets camp yesterday.

Brett Favre to the New York Jets?

With the reinstatement papers sitting on the desk of Roger Goodell, Brett Favre essentially forced the Packers' hand by chartering a plane for Green Bay earlier this afternoon. Once those papers are signed, Favre would be able to join Green Bay for training camp within a matter of hours — something the Green Bay brass has vehemently been against since Favre decided to make...

#4 Joe Smith

This past Saturday, the NY Jets released back-up punter Joe Smith, who wears jersey number 4. Brett Favre also signed his papers to be reinstated into the NFL on Tuesday. Could this be an omen for the emergence of Brett Favre to the city of bright lights and big buildings? As if that is not enough fuel to fuel Jets fans fire, the Green Bay packers quickly picked up Joe Smith....
