It's Andy Reid's Fault, Don't Blame McNabb

January 11, 1999 was the day Andy Reid was hired. September 7, 2008 will mark his 10th straight year as coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and the biggest season of his career.

That is a feat not many men have accomplished, especially in Philadelphia, where we chew up coaches and spit them out.

For 10 years, we've watched Andy turn around this franchise from the laughing stock Rich Kotite and Ray Rhodes left us with.

Very few coaches have ever had the kind of success he has. Four straight division championships, along with four straight conference championships, is nothing to brush off. Not to mention he has the third-highest winning percentage of active coaches behind Dungy and our friend in New England.

But, when you haven't won a championship in any sport in 25 years or 100 seasons, those numbers just don't mean anything. The Eagles haven't won a championship since 1960! That's 17,363 days for those who are counting.

This season is a make or break year for Reid and the front office. The team is finally filled with his personnel moves, and this is officially his team from top to bottom. Brian Dawkins is the only holdover from the defense Ray Rhodes built that carried Reid through his first six or seven years.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not insinuating Rhodes is a better coach than Reid, but that 2000 turnaround happened so fast because of Ray Rhodes' defensive players. Is it coincidence that the team went downhill when most of those players left?

If you understand football, you'll know that the defense was responsible for the 2000-2004 team success. And who built that defense? Not Andy!

Hugh Douglas, Troy Vincent, Jeremiah Trotter, Ike Reese, and Brian Dawkins would soon be replaced by names such as Mark Simoneau, Darren Howard, Jevon Kearse, Matt McCoy, Barry Gardner, and Levon Kirkland.

Still don't know why the team has gone from the class of the NFC to hoping for a playoff berth in '08? Let's look back at the drafts Reid has had.

In 1999, he hit a home run with Donovan McNabb. But people forget the Barry Gardner selection in round two, along with the rest of the garbage, none of which is even on the roster.

In 2000, Corey Simon was another home run, but Todd Pinkston and Bobby Williams were the next two picks, and not one player from any of the selections is on the roster now. Only one is even still playing in the NFL.

In 2001, he found a gem in Derrick Burgess. Know who he bricked on? Freddie Mitchell and Quintin Caver. Only A.J. Feeley and Buckhalter remain from that draft.

In 2002, he must have eaten his Lucky Charms because he hit on five out of his eight picks. Lito, Sheldon, B-West, Michael Lewis, and Raheem Brock all were great picks. I have no complaint whatsoever, except they let Brock walk.

In 2003, six picks, and only L.J. Smith was successful. The other five (including McDougle, who he traded up to get) will not be on the roster come opening day.

2004 saw another home run in Shawn Andrews. It also saw players like Matt Ware, Trey Darilek, Thomas Tapeh, and Dexter Wynn. Only Andrews and JR Reid remain.

This exercise could go on and on (and next year will include the 2005 busts, as they're not officially "busts" yet), but missing that much in the draft takes a 13-3 Super Bowl team and easily turns it into a 8-8 or 6-10 team.

Now not everyone hits on their draft picks, and they've probably been around the league average, but let's also not forget who he actually kept on the roster and had the audacity to feed us that they were legitimate starters.

Grab your barf bags as I'm about to rattle off the all-turd team: Todd Pinskton, James Thrash, Charles Johnson, Torrance Small, Matt Schoebel, Keith Adams, Mike McMahon, Dhani Jones, Blaine Bishop, Darwin Walker, Greg Lewis, Hank Fraley, Reno Mahe, Nate Wayne, Koy Detmer, N.D. Kalu, Brandon Whiting, Sam Rayburn, Josh Parry, and Dexter Wynn.

Feel sick yet? That list of crap makes me have to hurl.

The truth is this: Reid's super questionable talent evaluation, inability to make adjustments during a game, and flat out stubbornness that his system trumps talent is the real reason most of us Eagle fans are left scratching our head about 2008.

Is this a playoff team, and if so, is it one of the two best in the conference to give us a shot to play for the title?

Andy, anything short of an NFC Championship is unacceptable this season. This team consists of all your own players running your beloved system. Don't get it done this year, and this fan base will be calling for your head.

Those are some pretty good drafts considering our position in the draft for most of the years being near last. If you get one to two starters every draft thats really food. Notice when Brad Childress left the offense started to decline. It's not Andy's fault it's Morningweg's if anyones. It's mainly unlucky breaks, bad injuries, and stupid penalties like kicking a guy while he's down.

well there you go , andy looks at the picks as food, very good! haha. i agree with you but this trading out of the first round when you need help to get to the playoffs is getting ridiculous. we will see if it worked this year though.

thats funny!!! looking at pics of food!!!

Oh I agree I hate trading our first round pick for something done the line also.

When did Tom Modrak leave and Heckert come aboard?

*good not food

nicely written. Im not one for throwing people under the bus, but I think i have to agree with you... this is 100% Andy's team, and he needs to do something with it... otherwise its time for him to get to gettin.

it is his arrogance and his inability to adjust cause he feels his system is the end all be all!!! he either needs to put down the cheesesteak menu and look at the game so he can see for himself that it's not working!!!

LOL!!!!!!! exactly

I agree w. the article, but I'll only give Andy Reid 1/3rd of the blame. 1/3rd of the blame to McNabb's injuries and 1/3rd of the blame to Management Office for being so stingy. or maybe, Ill readjust my figures... 40% to the management, 30% to Andy Reid and 30% to McNabb's injuries. When management will spend more money, we will automatically become a way better team...

agreed

Do really think it's Andy Reid or Donovan's injuries that are the reason we've dropped from the elite? Donovan's injuries last year cost us a playoff birth. I beleive his poor play early on and missing two games really hurt us. I think we would've beat the Seahawks and ended the season on 4 straight wins if Don was in there. In 05 Don's sports hernia ended any chance we had of making the playoffs. In 06 Don was playing great but the team was only .500. He gets hurt again, Andy rally's the troops and he and Garcia bring us within 3 points of another trip to the NFC Championship. I really think we would have beat the Bears if we won that game.We were RED HOT! We can't forget 02 when Andy kept the team together and won 6 straight games when Don broke his ankle. In the NFL a headcoach can only do so much when his star quarterback is injured or playing injuerd for three straight years. Andy Reid and his questionable play calling and ineffectiveness to get Mcnabb an elite wideout may be why we haven't won a Superbowl, but it's not why we've dropped from the elite.

Hindsight is 20/20. You could do this for just about every team in the league. Andy has drafted pretty darn well over the years. Look at how many of our starters and stars on the team came via the draft. He's gone out and made some big splashes in free agency to land the best of the best...some panned out, others didnt. Thats the nature of the beast, but to be as successful as he has been in 9 years says a lot for his coaching and personel abilities. Go ahead and barf if you would like...I doubt anybody on here would care.

In the nfl--you have a window of opportunity and free agency---if you have a good qb--you will win period--mcnabb never ever had good fleet of wide recvers year in and out--and tweet year to year like ala COLTS--to have a shot year after year---if you have good player's know's the system--and averge qb--anyone steping in will have a chance--in west coast offense--d-mac has a cannon---andy reid made poor choices--like other coaches in nfl---

I never understood, in reid's 9 yrs, why T.O. was the only all pro wr they went after!!!!!!! I remember watching Plaxico Burress coming out of michigan st, but noooooo..... the F.O. didin't think so!! Again.....Plaxico's a F.A, but noooooo..... the F.O. didn't think so.... IT'S THE FRONT OFFICES FAULT MCNABB HAS TO RUN AROUND, BUYING TIME FOR SOMEONE TO GET OPEN, WHICH IS A BIG PART OF HIS INJURY PRONE CAREER!!!!! Peyton,Eli, Brady,Cullpepper with Moss, Warner, Bulger,Montana, Young, all had great wr's for several yrs....... Geuss what? THEY RARELY GOT HURT.... Hmmmmm....

exactly steagles!!!! the soup man had to run for dear life for the bozo's we had to get open!!! eventually age and injuries caught up to him the last couple of years!!! he had a cast on his leg for the 1st half of last season and thats why the offense stalled!!! he couldn't run around and find an open man they pressed curtis and you can leave reggie clown open all day cause he's a real pro bowler in the making (SARCASM)!!! the whole team has begged for more playmakers and the arrogant phat phuck still thinks his system is gonna work!!! it's sad and frustrating!!! if the soup man gets hurt again this season you can blame reid and his stubborn fatness for not getting a dependable legit #1!!!!

LMAO!!! i see my certain little know it all friend is thumbin down people again!!! cause only they know about everything about sports and have an opinion!!!!

Well said.....it would be hard to imagine big red gettin the ax.....if we miss the playoffs it could be andys and donovans head.

William Thomas is from the Ray Rhodes era

My POINT EXACTLY WSTCSTEAGLES--GREAT BLOG---it just makes, your qb better--not just mcnabb--anyone stepping in,with weapons to throw to!!!!! F.A IS THE BLAME PERIOD ON THAT!!!

nice article.
man those are some very painful articles. but there is a good point in his drafting ability.... versus the teams ability to hold onto or develop key players.
I trust in Andy, he has done so much for us.
as for us not making the playoffs... we should have been there, how many games did we lose by less than 7points. we couldnt score in the redzone missing our starting TE. this season should be different and if not maybe it will soon be time for a change but i'm not sure it is quite yet

great post, im one of the many fans praying for a miracle wr move to be done but as the days go on im slowly starting to realize its not going to happen, is reid really that confident in curtis being our number one guy or is he just confused?

A football team raises and falls on the quality and play of the QB and the players that surround him. Andy Reid's pick of McNabb was the smartest move he has made to date. Without Mcnabb, we would be seeing the likes of Doug Pederson (you left him off your all turd team. I think he deserves a place on it ) and Mike McMahon. And no playoff berths. I was a kool-aid drinker for a long time but no more. Andy is an example of the Peter principle and his stubborn persona and arrogant approach to the media leaves us fans with a bad taste in our mouth. We have no championships to hold up. He should be going all out to get one. He has not surrounded Donovan with enough quality players and I think we missed our window of opportunity with this team. Buddy Ryan made the same mistake by not getting Randall enough help and what do we have to show for that? Nothing. Reid needs to change himself which won't happen. We will have to wait for Kolb and the next constructed team fro a possible championship. If Mcnabb stays healthy , we can make the playoffs. But does anyone think we can beat the Colts or the Patriots? I don't think so. 10-6, then one and done and see you next yr. I hate having this attitude going into the season.

Nicely said!!!!

i agree with you about 90%. you cant go into a season thinking what teams you can or cant beat, to many things can happen throughout a season. who thought the giants could beat the patriots in the s.b., besides we almost beat the patriots last year with a backup q.b. that likes to throw interceptions. now your teams that you think we cant beat are just one injury away from not even being a playoff team. i heard sean king pick the eagles to win the s.b. this year during the philly soul playoff game today. lets make this guy look like a genius!

there's only one other person besides reid that thinks we dont need a #1 wideout!!!!

...lol, you know the Eagles are like top 5 in terms of starters and probowlers drafted right?
Drafting isn't an exact science. Most of the league has much worse picks than that.

But how many times will the idiots on here bring up that we could have had Reggie Wayne, etc.?? Hell how many teams passed on Colston???? Allllllllll of them! Logic/stats/common sense will get you nowhere on here man, most bloggers on YB lack all of the aforementioned. We know the truth, we know what a great job our FO/coaching staff have done and we'll support them no matter what. Why do you think the Steelers ended up winning a SB? It took Cowher 14 years, but the fans of Pittsburgh were behind him year in and year out. Philly could only be so lucky. Our fellow fans are passionate to no end, but sorry...you support your team through thick and thin and somebody doesn't have to get fired after each loss.

Ok I'll get off my soapbox now...heres to being a loyal/knowledgeable Eagles fan.

Agreed Shady, to start rambling off names of players that didn't play so well, when I would say very few of them were "sold to us" as legit starters with any sort of important role on the team. The majority of those guys were inter-changeable parts. All those guys listed almost none of them had "expectations" they were what they were, and I don't remember anybody on the Eagles trying to tell me how great any of those guys were.

Yes, this team is a playoff team, the defense alone should win you 5 or 6 games.

Most of Reids drafts have been pretty bad. And trading out of the first round two years in a row is retarded. And all of the lineman Reid has drafted have been bad with the exception of Andrews, yet Reid still drafts lineman over every other position. The one thing I disagree with is Koy Detmer, he served as a good back up for years, and when he was holding for Ackers, we didn't miss as many field goals.

Spelled Akers not Ackers moron.

I wrote it after coming home from Happy Hour I'm glad you have the time to correct my spelling errors though.

Oh then you fine.

Most teams drafts are bad.....look it up, it's an inexact science. Unless your a top 10 pick it's pretty much up in the air. To just single out a bunch of backups is unfair to Reid. How quickly we forget how bad this team really was until he got here. Back then we were hoping to win, and if we did we really enjoyed it. Now we've become sort of spoiled, we don't hope to win , we expect to. And you can thank Andy Reid for that mentality we now have as fans. You can rip on Reid about a lot of things, but nit-picking about guys like Dexter Wynn? Seriously?

And how may top 10 picks go bust? Leaf, Gallery, Tony Mandarich, Bosworth, Akili Smith I could go on for days. Kinda funny how Reid had McNabb ranked ahead of Couch and Smith, granted he never had the chance to take Couch but he wouldn't have selected him if he had his choice of all 3.

Oh can't forget to bust on Penn State busts....Ki-jana Carter, Curtis Enis, and Blair Thomas!

I don't really seem to understand the point at taking a shot at Penn State running backs, but there have been more great PSU running backs than bad, such as Lydell Mitchell, Franco Harris, Lenny Moore, Curt Warner, and Larry Johnson and I won't even go into the great Linebackers from PSU. I am assuming it is because you are a PITT fan mind PSU has more Hall of Fame running backs and Hall of Famers period than PITT does. Think next time you open your mouth.

Did you attend either Pitt or Penn State? If not then shut up. Oh and know your facts before opening your mouth. Franco Harris + Lenny Moore = 2 Hall of Famers. Pitt has 4 Hall of Famers...Penn State has 5 total. And you'll be able to add Curtis "My Favorite" Martin to that list very soon.

http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/colleges.html

So now who needs to think before they open their mouth?

I do attend Penn State, so yea you can shut your mouth thanks. And last I checked, 5 is more than 4 and 2 is more than 1.
