Jonathan Vilma - one of the classier and more media-savvy players to suit up for Gang Green in some time - is probably not the guy you'd expect to come out in defense of Michael Vick and Pacman Jones. But that's exactly what Vilma did yesterday, joining WFAN's Chris "Mad Dog" Russo on the radio in order to promote his youth football camp. Early in the interview, Russo steered the conversation toward the NFL's recent player conduct controversies, and what followed were some of the dumber comments you'll hear from a professional athlete.

  • Interesting. I think all of these athletes have this instinct inside of them to defend other athletes. It's like a blind loyalty you have for your family. If your brother is in a fight you defend him right? What if he's fighting a guy who's girlfriend he slept with? You still defend him. Same here. These guys can't stand to see the media pick a fight with one of their own.
  • i dunno, call me crazy, but i don't really see how vilma's comments were that dumb. i also don't think that portis' comments were so crazy. i think portis was largely saying that dog fighting happens all over the place and people making a big deal about mike vick - cops having an interest in this awful dog fighter - is a little weird when he's seen plenty of fighting in his life. and that it seems a little odd that no media and no cops seemed to give a crap about all that brutalization, but they care a lot about it in vick's case. - i don't think those thoughts are so crazy....

Washington Nationals Fans Are Not Happy About Elijah Dukes At All...

As a fan in the Washington area, I see there are there a lot of people, and I mean a lot of people, that are not happy online. A good barometer of how fans feel come from wbsites and blogs, and it is almost universal that people in the Washington region give a big thumbs down to the move. It looks like Rays' fans are elated that Dukes is out of their hair; however, a lot...

The Saga of Michael Vick: Boy, Are You Quiet...

Mr. Vick, was there absolutely any reason you could have not spoke for yourself yesterday? One would think that you would have PR team in place, your lawyers at hand and have the ability to defend yourself and proclaim your innocence in the public domain. I mean, if I was your in position and was in a world of trouble, I'd be so defiant and would articulate my case that I...

Line of Scrimmage: Week 15 - Petrino Out...Who's Next?

Bobby Petrino and the Atlanta Falcons were a bad match from the very beginning. Forget the Michael Vick situation for a second, and consider the former Louisville head man's coaching style. Word from Flowery Branch, GA, where the Falcons train, was

Michael Vick Is A Disgrace

More on the story that just won’t go away.  I talked at length about Michael Vick on MHR Radio last night, about his supposed involvement in a dog-fighting ring that was run at a property he owns in Virginia.  I made the point that behind capital crimes, cruelty to animals is one of the most ...

The Curtis Martin Way

With his impending retirement Curtis Martin should be celebrated for many reasons. He's the 4th all-time leading rusher and a five-time pro bowler. He is without a doubt one of the best Jets players in the franchise's history. A gifted running back, he is one of the most unselfish players you will ever see. He never held out, never complained about playing time and even...

What's Playing on Joey Harrington's iPod?

With the recent news of Michael Vick (which you may have heard about) being arraigned on charges as the chairman of a Dog Holocaust, his job with the Atlanta Falcons appears to be on the rocks. Thankfully, the Falcons picked themselves up one mighty fine back-up plan in Joey Harrington. It would appear that Joey has got, yet another chance to prove us all wrong.

A Redeeming Thought on Joe Nathan

Not everyone deserves a second chance. Just look at Brad Childress. He has been a crucial element in the perpetual choking of the Vikings, and most fans would like to see him replaced as soon as In other cases, such as Michael Vick?s, a chance at redemption is due him. He has served ...

Goodell Starting of on the right foot, but he has a tough road ahead....

I have to say that since new NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has taken over, he is doing an EXCELLENT job. Especially with the new conduct policies. Although he's done a great job so far, Goodell has a long tough road ahead of him and as long as he has the guts to do what needs to be done, the NFL has a great future ahead. The latest challenges he has to deal with are Joey...
