Mawae says players will fight hair proposal

New NFLPA president Kevin Mawae said Thursday he's against the cutting of the hair proposal brought on by Herm Edwards, and he is going to fight it. He said, "I don't think there is any rule in the NFL rulebook saying your hair can't be a certain length. For management, council or ownership to say we need all our players to cut their hair or bind it up or whatever, I think they need to understand it goes way beyond just haircuts," Mawae said. It goes into a cultural issue with the African American population in our league, and also with the Polynesian population. The hair is a part of their culture. It's part of the history and the background. To ask a player to cut it off just because a select few don't like it, I think there is an issue with that."

I think it's dumb. These men have been growing their hair for several years, now all of a sudden you want them to cut it off. I understand putting it in a pony tail or tucking it in, but just asking them to chop it off is stupid.

i can't really say i blame them, if it's just a safety issue then there are ways around that!!

Well, it could be a safety issue. Next, they are going to have to make a rule that you can't tackle by the hair unless they have one already. I do remember the Larry Johnson/Polomalu thing.

never thought about that five, good point -dig it!!!

They don't have that and it never happens, why I don't know. Most of the times the only thing you can grab of Polamalu is his hair flapping in the breeze as he blows by everybody. His wife, Theodora, should be more worried about his hair than the NFL. She was in one of my classes at Pitt, and despite being gorgeous....he has nicer hair than she does!

yea i gotta agree really no need for this rule only going to create discontent

If the NFL creates this rule, it will be one of the dumbest ever. They have already made it the no fun league, so why would they taking away one of the last ways players can express themselves?
And seriously, how could we have a league without players with dreads? Dreads are the sh!t

At least they don't have to wear suits like the NBA. But hey, thats their job...the bosses set the rules. Why should the NFL be any different than any other job? They don't have to follow the rules...just find a new job.

Like I said before, a harcore fan is going to know the players name and number anyway. If they want to grow their hair long, then so be it. I know the NFL wants uniformity and all of that crap, but I guess this is for the crappola fan who goes to a game one f**kin' time a year and could care less if he/she knows the number or names of the players. They are there on a free ticket and half of them don't know what I damn first down is. Damn.....that Jack Daniels Single Barrel is working. I think I'll have another.

"A" first down. Told you this stuff was working.

Stupid rule. But lets be real...The 1st time some player grabs and rips himself some dreads, all the hair will be cut or tucked in the helmet.

I can not believe the NFL they are going way to far on this one and I hope they don't suceed. The NFL is always trying to take the individualism out of the NFL. They have been doing it for year and the King is really tired of this it started with no face painting no celibration, now your going to tell people how to wear their hair?

First off this is the biggest waist of time, money & energy for the NFL. Second, if I know the Polynesian community, they will fight for their beliefs untill the bloody end! This is only going to get the fans behind the players and against the League. We'll probly start seeing a bunch of fans in the stands with long wigs on just to spite the league. Lol...!

I am on my way to the wig store to get my dreads right now.

I'm sure Ditka will let you borrow his

this is a ridiculous rule. we're legislating hair length now?
