According to the Carroll County Times, Baltimore Ravens' running back Willis McGahee will undergo arthroscopic surgery to his left knee as soon as Monday. Yet another hit to the Ravens offense. McGahee was incredibly productive last year (his first year in Baltimore) and was expected to have a huge role in the offense again this season. Given the uncertainly at quarterback (who's the starter, Kyle Boller or Troy Smith?) and the retirement of Pro Bowl left tackle Jonathan Ogden, the Ravens offense faces a ton of questions. Troy Smith Gets The Nod

In the latest installment of the 'Supplanting Kyle Boller' drama, Heisman Trophy winner and Ravens rookie Troy Smith will make his first NFL start this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Brian Billick announced yesterday.

Yardbarker interview with Ravens QB Joe Flacco

Joe Flacco spent a few minutes on the phone with the Yard today. I have to admit, as a Ravens fan, I was skeptical of the pick. Especially at eighteen. Not because of Flacco's skill or potential, but because Kyle Boller never amounted to anything more than a career backup. I'm scarred and scared. One thing I do love, though, is Flacco's accent. They'll love him in...

Hungry Like a Wolfe

Wondering who should win the Heisman? Troy Smith? Adrian Peterson? Nope. The answer is Garrett Wolfe from rarely mentioned Northern Illinois. Some Stats: 1,343 Yards rushing (avg. 224 yds/game) 15 TD 285 total yards against #1 Ohio State (171 rush, 114 pass)

Mini-Camp Update

What's up yardbarker? I would say were about half way thru with the mini camps and veteran camps and OTA's (Organized Team Activities) and passing camps, and whatever else Coach Smith is putting us thru to get this team on the right track. After these last 2 months of preparation, I can honestly say there is no team I would rather be on then the falcons. When people encounter change...

The Day After

Ray Lewis has joined most of the M*A*S*H unit with a dislocated finger, but he’ll play on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Kyle Boller got his bell rung, and most of the city wants him to sit, but he will get the start on Sunday at quarterback. Brian Billick is still the head coach of the B...

Troy Smith Era begins

Seattle breaks Troy Smith's spirit and Willis McGahee's ribs.

EA Sports Throws a Curveball

EA Sports will announce the coverboy for NCAA Football 2008 in a press conference today. But thanks to a report from Deadspin, we already know who it will be. Brady Quinn? Troy Smith? Chris Leak? None of the above. Boise State quarterback Jared Zabransky has been chosen to be on the cover

Byron Leftwich is an embarrassment to himself, others

Kyle Boller was not Baltimore's first choice on draft day. It was Byron Leftwich, who today was cut yet again, this time by the Atlanta Falcons. How do you get outplayed by Joey Harrington and Chris Redman? Goodbye, career; hello, more cheeseburgers.

Rough Outing For Troy Smith

The Baltimore Sun's Jamison Hensley reports from Ravens camp that Troy Smith took the first team's snaps today. And struggled. In six plays, he was 1-for-5 passing with three interceptions and a fumbled snap. One of the interceptions was made by secondary coach Chuck Pagano, who was filling in as a defensive back. Kyle Boller was 4-for-4 in the same drill but threw all short passes...

The Great Divide

There is an unwritten rule among those in the sports media that is universally accepted from Syracuse to San Francisco, Biloxi to Baltimore. A code of conduct that has not only dictated the coverage of both collegiate and professional athletics, but one that has managed to create a gaping hole in ideology between the two main constituencies of sport. The mandate, which has spawned...

Ravens Week 2 - Wipe Out

I was thirsty. Jeff and I had just crossed the 2-mile mark on his wrist pedometer, which we're using to track how far we run along the sidelines this season, and after following Derrick Mason around all day, I was seriously lacking in electrolytes. I'm just guessing I'd sweat purple if Gatorade had its way, although despite Syracuse being called quite possibly the worst...

Phil Jackson inspires a Semi-Comprehensive List of the Most Overrated Coaches

No matter how many times I see a Phil Jackson led team in the finals, I can't help but think that the word "genius," gets thrown around a little too much in reference to this guy. Is he a great coach? Of course he is. Is he a basketball genius? My probably biased mind tells me no. Now correct me if I am wrong, but I think Kobe and Phil would be making tee times at Riviera...

Flacco to start!? Hell no

AOL's Ryan Wilson today posted an article with the title, "It looks like Joe Flacco will be the Ravens starter at some point in '08," and he proceeds to offer no evidence that I could see other than the fact that Flacco took most of his mini-camp snaps from the shotgun formation. There might be other evidence hiding in there somewhere. I only read the post once. And even that was...

More questions mount as the Raider off-season advances

The careful and cautious approach that the Oakland Raider front office has taken this off-season has been a refreshing departure from the miscalculated cash catastrophe of 2008. Still, there is something that feels amiss. As if lost in the euphoria of late season success, the desire of the team to build and not destroy has become a mantra of not tampering with an unachieved perfection...
