The Viking Age:
Bryant McKinnie is saying pretty much what you'd expect him to say about the semi-limbo he finds himself in after his offseason arrest for using a metal pole to beat the crap out of a nightclub bouncer:
I actually have been focused on football. I feel like some of the stuff that happened in the offseason has been my motivation to play well this season. I've been pretty focused.
People may not know the whole story. Sometimes it might get portrayed as one way when that might not be the case. … I guess when everything is done and over with, then you could possibly talk about it. It depends on how everything goes.
Someday Mount will have to explain to me how getting arrested for being a violent dickhead could possibly act as motivation for one to play better on the football field. Maybe if you were still really angry at the guy you clocked with the pole you could project his face onto the player you were trying to block and that would make you want to maul him even more. A little more aggression might be a good thing for Bryant actually, given his occasional slug-like tendencies.
It seems a foregone conclusion that Bryant will be suspended for some part of the regular season - what we still don't know is for how long. I still wish there was some way we could get out from under this mountain of turd but it looks like we're stuck with him.

R.I.P. Chilly’s Goatee
I don't know what was going on in Brad Childress's life that made him want to grow a goatee.? Maybe it was just a mid-life crisis thing.? Some natural old guy final grab at youth or whatever.? At any rate, Chilly has decided to shed the goatee, returning to his original moustache.? Bad-ass Chilly is gone and Major Dad is back.? Or Ned Flanders or whatever moustache-wearing doof you...
Griffin Looks Good
SI's Jim Trotter is high on third-year cornerback Cedric Griffin, who I thought took a step backward last year.? Trotter on Griffin's training camp performance:
Cornerback Cedric Griffin might be the most improved starter. The third-year pro struggled to finish pass plays last year in his first season as a fulltime starter. He would be in position or around the ball, but finished...
Preseason Opener Plans
The Vikings play their first preseason game tomorrow night against Seattle. Brad Childress says the starters will go a quarter or maybe a little more if circumstances dictate (last year the offense got screwed out of some reps because the defense kept forcing turnovers and returning them for TDs). Tarvaris Jackson will get the first-team reps at QB, with Gus Frerotte second and...
Farwell Hurt
Heath Farwell, in with the second-team defense in the 1st quarter (don't you just love preseason?), injured his knee in what appeared to be pretty severe fashion and had to be helped off the field.? The first-team defense had a fairly pathetic effort, allowing big runs and passes, but did manage to hold the Seahawks to 3 on their second series (which was set up by a Visanthe Shiancoe...
Chad Pennington?
There's no suspense over what the Jets plan to do with Chad Pennington now that they've acquired Brett Favre - GM Mike Tannenbaum ended that by announcing Pennington would be cut today. He then unleashed the usual spiel about how sad everyone is and blah blah:
It's a bittersweet moment for us. I have not had the opportunity to talk to Chad as of this call. I know [coach] Eric...
Robison Out Indefinitely
Vikings defensive end Brian Robison will have surgery on a varicose vein in his left leg.? The team says he will be out indefinitely.? Robison hasn't practiced since Monday, but earlier indicated that it's a minor problem that will probably sideline him for two or three weeks.? Coach Brad Childress thinks Robison will be back at camp by Monday to undergo rehab, but likely won't participate...
Ravens Top Pats 16-15 in Preseason Opener
Preseason is a time for evaluation and while most will not read much of anything into the Ravens victory last night. One thing is for certain; the competition for who will lead Baltimore under center is still in need of further review.
Kyle Boller really showed nothing new for the judges. He led a fine drive in the opening possession in which he showed efficiency and arm strength...
Vikings Focusing On Quarterbacks Tonight
The Minnesota Vikings will want to look at all of their quarterbacks in their preseason opener tonight. Tarvaris Jackson and the starters will play at least a quarter against Seattle at the Metrodome, depending on how the game unfolds in terms of snaps for the offenses and defenses, coach Brad Childress said.
A FavreTV update
Green Bay fans won't be able to see the two times the Jets and Brett Favre play on Fox, as those games are on at the same time as Packer games scheduled on Fox.But a friend of mine in the local TV biz is betting the CBS station in town has already fired off a memo asking for Jets coverage in Green Bay.
Favre 'happy' to join Jets in Cleveland
Somehow, the Brett Favre saga navigated its way through Green Bay, Minnesota and Tampa Bay and officially came to a close in Cleveland Thursday. The future Hall of Fame quarterback, traded to the New York Jets for a conditional...
