PLAYERS: Jim Sorgi

Do we really need 18 games? NO. The league wants them, the networks probably do too, but we don't need them. The players damn sure don't need them. So what's it all about? The league needs a hedge against any future decline in interest over preseason games, and the networks would love to have two more weeks of instant high ratings. That's it, really. Both entities also want to avoid what often happens in week 17 now; teams like the Colts turning it into Jim Sorgi day because they've already settled their playoff position. They want meaningful games all season long so that Manning, Brady, etc. will be on the tube through the end. But what about the players? I'm sure they'll be able to turn it into more money on contracts some kind of way, but do they really need two more games for their running back to grind up their knees? Instead of lasting until they hit 30 or so, we could see more and more them being done before they hit 27 or 28, which I'm sure would suit the league just fine because the quicker you can end their careers, the less you'll ultimately have to pay them. There's ultimately no upside for the men who would suffer the most from this, the players, so I say it's a bad idea. And like I said, we really don't need it. Be honest with yourselves.
