PLAYERS: Todd HeapRay Rice
TEAMS: Baltimore Ravens

Willis McGhee is struggling with a sore left knee, which allows Ray Rice to gain more reps and get comfortable with the new offense. I expect a big year from Rice. He is the kind of back that will always play well in the NFL. He is hard to knock off his feet, he has a low center of gravity, and his leg drive is very impressive. Add the fact that the running game is going to be so important in Baltimore.

Cam Cameron, the new offensive coordinator, has a huge challenge in Baltimore. With an offensive line that seems to be in flux, he needs to find a passing game but has no proven commodity at quarterback. What Baltimore must do early in the year is prove they can handle the pressure packages on first down and can throw the ball. Thinking you can establish the run to start games is the fastest way to find yourself behind 10-0 to start the second quarter.

You can only run so many screens in games, and before long the defense will challenge you to pass. If I was in Baltimore, I would make sure I had as many blocking tight ends on the team as I could find. Blocking tight ends can help in protection and the Ravens left tackles will need help. It will also help Todd Heap in the passing game, freeing him up to make plays.

Love Ray Rice, but the Ravens have much work to do and I don't envy the task at hand for Cameron right now.

This is a cruel joke, right? What does Baltimore have to gain by starting Kyle Boller in the team's first preseason game, which is against the New England Cheatriots? Kyle Boller is a known entity. Here are the things we know: 1) He is a quality backup quarterback, maybe not in the NFL but definitely in Baltimore, where he enjoys familiarity, mediocrity and the ire of...

Kyle Boller (who literally missed a barn with a pass in practice today) will be starting under center for the Ravens in their first preseason game.

Getting ready for the Ravens

My first week in the NFL and getting ready to play Baltimore. I've never had a Tuesday off before so that was a little different, but I didn't do much with the off day. I paid my rent, paid some bills and watched film. I brought some DVDs home to try to get a feel for the Ravens, look at the backs, watch for tendencies. They're a little tough to scout right now because...

Ravens give Kyle Boller nod to start 1st pre-season game vs. Patriots

The Baltimore Ravens have an interesting QB controversy going on right now, trying to figure out who is the next starter in franchise history. As of now, it's another go-around of former 1st rounder out of Cal Kyle Boller as he gets the chance to show what he's made of versus the New England Patriots on Thursday. Boller is getting the nod most likely because of his experience...

McGahee could miss preseason opener

Left knee injury has hampered Ravens RB throughout camp. There is a "possibility" that Willis McGahee could be sidelined for Thursday's preseason opener and rookie Ray Rice will start at running back, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said after Sunday's practice. McGahee has missed a large portion of training camp with a left knee injury. "Right now, we...

Heisman Night and Ray

Ray Rice said he'd watch the Heisman ceremonies tonight and he managed to say it without sounding bummed about not being there himself. "My name was mentioned in that category," he said. "I can take pride in that." Set to...

Camping out: Injuries hit Ravens hard

Ray Rice took nearly every snap one practice because four running backs were sidelined. Chad Slaughter suited up as the starting left tackle about 12 hours after being signed because three linemen were banged up. And Kelly Talavou, who is on his third team in a year, lined up in front of Ray Lewis because three defensive tackles went down. More than a quarter of the Ravens...

Kyle Boller To Start Preseason Job Still Open

Ravens veteran QB Kyle Boeller will get the nod in the team's preseason opener on Thursday at New England. Boeller, who had a rough start during the spring, has improved his consistency and discipline this summer in taking more high-percentage throws. "He's been here awhile," HC John Harbaugh said.

Ray-Ray

Courtney Greene only stopped calling Ray Rice "Ray-Ray" to me this year. Of course, when you grow up with a kid, it's hard to start referring to him formally. And when the kid's Ray, well, he has to be one...

Ravens Pickup Released Redskins RB Marcus Mason

The Ravens have picked up Redskins cast-off Marcus Mason to help out the RB core and placed him on their practice squad.  "The numbers were better with Baltimore, and we collectively thought that it made the most sense to go up the road," Mason's agent, Chad Wiestling said. "They only have two running backs on the active roster and it could be a very good opportunity...

Figurs Getting Extra Work At WR

The Baltimore Ravens' top return specialist wants to do more than just return kicks; he also wants to secure a role as a wide receiver, as well.? According to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, Yamon Figurs was informed that he would get an extended look at wideout during camp.? Figurs has been putting in the extra work on the JUGGS machine to acclimate his hands to the...

Bruises in Baltimore

Some injury news out of Baltimore this weekend. None of it is great. Only one of them has me worried. 3) Willis McGahee and his lower-left-leg injury are on the sidelines. There is no word on how long he'll be out, though Willis has said that he doesn't expect to be sidelined for too long. Regardless, this injury doesn't have me too worried. I was high on McGahee when...
