In an attempt to curb Mark Sanchez' turnovers, Rex Ryan said today he will work closely with the rookie QB in an effort to emphasize ball security. At the same time, Ryan announced he will take a greater role in the offense, spending time in the offensive meeting room and working in practice with the offense. Ryan said he realizes that he must become more of a "team manager and a game manager" instead of focusing entirely on the defense. In making this declaration, he went out of his way to say it's not a "slap" at coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who will remain the play caller. Ryan said he wants to "support" Schottenheimer and that he has no intention of taking over the play calling. Ryan has been criticized for being too defensive-oriented, and not coaching the entire team. He actually admitted that the criticism has been accurate, and that he should be more involved in the entire operation. Though he didn't say so directly, it appears he was nudged by people in the organization to make this decision. In another matter, Ryan made is clear that he was none too pleased with the Patriots throwing deep to Randy Moss in the final seconds. "I was surprised by it and I did feel a little disrespected," he said. More fodder for the next Jets-Patriots showdown in 2010.
