STOP PLAYING AROUND, PAY HESTER!

Donte's opinion: I think they should pay him top dollar! He's a game changer at any moment. Getting better on offense also!

The unexpected holdout of Bears receiver/kick returner Devin Hester illustrates the flipside of the mess that is the manner in which NFL rookies are paid.

Under the current system, players are paid over the first three-to-six years of their careers based primarily on when they were drafted. If a top-five pick flames out, he keeps the money. If a seventh-rounder becomes a stud, he gets nothing more... until he gets a new contract.

For many of the picks, they receive only a slotted signing bonus and minimum salaries for the life of the deal.

"For me to be being paid as much as players on other teams who are sixth- and seventh-round picks who haven't played a snap," Hester said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "They're getting paid the same amount as me after the two years I've had. . . . It isn't fair."

Amen, Devin. It isn't fair.

And so the NFL and the NFL Players Association need to agree on a system that permits every rookie to earn more money based on performance.

That said, the NFL currently makes available a league-wide pool that is distributed to players based on a formula that takes into account how much they play and how little they're paid. In 2008, for example, Willie Colon of the Steelers picked up an extra $309,000 on top of his $450,000 base salary.

But Hester surely wants more than that. He wants a base salary that reflects his abilities and that reward him for his performance over the first two years of his contract.

The best approach could be to create a new players' incentive system that, like the performance-based pay, isn't part of each team's salary cap. The rookies' base pay would be determined by a narrow NBA-style formula, making contract negotiatons simple and eliminating the opportunity for ridiculous increases from one year to the next (and reducing significantly the influence of agents). Then, every rookie's pay would be supplemented based on a system of incentives specifically negotiated for each position.

It's the easiest path to a win-win. The rookies would consume less cap space on each of their teams, and thus more of it would be available to veterans. But the rookies would then be compensated fairly and appropriately for what they actually do between the white lines.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that players hold out. But then, like you said, the way guys get their "first contracts" is even more ridiculous. Why should some 1st round pick get paid 10 times more than a guy that has proven himself for 5 years?

I think the NFL should have a situation like the MLB does. Players get paid a certain amount after they're drafted (plus signing bonuses) and they don't get more than that until they sign their next deal.

I agree with Donte. I am usually anti-holdout, but this situation is different. He is one of the games best and definitely the Bears' biggest weapon yet he's due to make the same money as some of this years sixth round picks? That's insane.

I completely agree with you donte, I do not know why or what is making it so difficult for the Players association and the NFL to come up with a better system that goes more on play for draftees then these ridiculous contracts for unproven players. Cough "Matt Ryan" cough cough....

I agree. By the time his contract comes up for renegotiation organically, he could have blown out his knee and be the greatest player to have ever played for the league minimum. With the NFL having the least guaranteed contracts in professional sports, I hate hearing about hold outs, but I certainly understand them.

Resign Him get him he is still tryin to become your top WR instead of staying a CB so you pay him like Tommie Harris and get him in your camp.
Hey Donte how much ya wanna bet this article will be on ESPN today or tommorrow

I'm excited to see Hester play O. Too bad they don't really have a QB. The O-line should be better, though. They got Chris Williams from Vandy. Hopefully he pans out for them. It would be nice to see Chicago step up its game and challenge in the AFC North. That has the potential to be a very interesting conference this year.

If they D comes back and becomes the top of the line defense that make Qbs crap themselves then they can pull a Baltimore and win the Super with there Defense or just snap the ball to Hester and let him do it all besides Qb is the dumbist position in the Nfl who needs one LOL

I think that is the bottom line. The NFL needs to adapt the NBA's salary system when it comes to rookies. Therefore we would have less hold outs and subsequent rewards to players who earn them. I find it ridiculous that teams spend a ton of money on unproven players, and limit the cash flow they have in acquiring proven talent via free agents. I believe this is the reason for the downward spiral of many teams. A direct correlation to drafting poorly and as a consequence gaining ANOTHER high draft pick the following year to squander away even MORE cap space. Until the CBA is corrected and players are paid according to their abilities, this will continue to be a problem. As for Hester..

Currently there isn't a way to really determine his market value. The NFL doesn't have a pay scale to determine "elite special teams player" nor do I think he should be paid "#1 Pro Bowl receiver type money". So what do you do? I don't think a performance based contract is out of the question. He should be rewarded for past accolades (say 250k per kick/punt return td as a signing bonus) and the avg salary of the top 10 "#2 receivers in the NFL" (which is a fair assessment since we don't really know how good he will be as a WR). He should also receive an additional 100k per punt/kick return td as an added incentive. And an additional 250k for making the Pro Bowl team, as well as an additional 250k if he makes up for 30% of the Bears total points production (excluding the kicker).

thats a good idea

Field position is one of the most important parts of winning in the NFL and Hester is a big contributing factor with that. He also adds another way of scoring to a team that struggles to find the end zone, given their poor QB play. I hope they don't decide his fate with the flip of a coin.

It is going to be tough to pay him the way he wants to be paided! He is a ST guy that probably wants to get bernard berrian money. He is alrewady the best ST player i have ever seen and he has only played 2 seasons. But i do agree with you Donte homie needs to get his paper!!!!!!!! GO BILLS!

I am not in favor of 90% of holdouts but this is not one of them. Hester is completely justified when he asks for more money. I wish he had discussed his discontent before training camp but i really dont know if he did or not. GREAT article Donte your top notch

Hester is the best KR/PR ever. He's young and deserves a new contract.

true story Donte.... you're quickly becoming one of my fav non-Eagle athletes btw. I look forward to your blogging.

Hester has earned a paycheck and he adds a weapon to their team that quite a few teams don't have. It is ridiculous to let a guy with his raw talent sit through training camp, every other NFL team is salivating at the thought of having this guy on the trade block if no deal is worked out. Bears have potential still, but i'm starting to wonder about their choices?

i will tune in to a Bears game just to see Hester, opponents would like to have him if for one reason only, so they dont have to face him

Same Here or watch my boy Urlacher knock someone out

oh ya hes fun too, seems like he is in on every tackle, flys to the ball...

He is a beast

i dont like holdouts no good ever comes of it the player misses training camp and usally goes down in the first couple weeks of the regular season not to mention gets fined and only costs himself more money. An i agree the pay scale of the drafted rookies is crazy. I think the teams should have incentive to cut loose a first or second round pick before their entire contract is up as long as they divide that money between the other rookies drafted in that class not evenly of course but too the players that deserve it but since nothing like this will ever be done comin players and just finish the deal you signed and then ink the big one.

give profootballtalk due though - citation man!
your blog is awesome - I'm pumped for this year big time. I think it's players like you that are gonna give us the great start we need, that instinct to win in week 1 - no more letting early games get away then have to crawl back up the rankings. I know we can do it.
And yes I agree, Hester needs to get paid.

i think its a double-edged sword, i think he is justified for demanding a new contract, but holding out during training camp isnt the smartest thing, esp for someone in a transistional period where he'll be a more of a reciever. No doubt hes got ridiculous talent and deserves more money but i hope he doesnt do anything crazy like hold out for the entire season like he said he would cuz that would anger his fans and have everyone questin his dependability, but i expect the bears to fork over them duckets right away

Then we're forming a consensus here that the NFL Draft order determines a players signing bonus -- a "welcome to the league" bonus.

Then, all players will be subject to an alternate system to incent players and provide salary based largely on performance.

Make it team based and uniform thoughout the league, whereas a high performing team will be allotted a higher performance incentive to all be divvied out at management's discression.

Team ownership would take it upon themselves to further construct an incentive payout system that is transparent and fair. Ultimately, the highest performing players on the highest performing teams will make the most money.

Player transfers would be based primarily on expected team performance, and second on the expected individual opportunity.

Base salaries and guaranteed money (new contract bonus) can be negotiated, but all players would have the opportunity to earn the maximum performance incentive alotted to their respective position.

Let's all move to Green Bay and force to board to test out this little experiment, then buy the NFL and get it done!

this guy is the Bears' only scoring threat and he doesnt play every down!

C'mon Bears dont be stupid!

lets see he's only 3 or 4 return TDs away from the the career record! he will double or triple the record no doubt. although i'm an eagles fan. Hester is probably my favorite NON-Eagle.

no way nceagles your favorite eagle has to be and always will be TO

yeah i was a fan of him when he was an eagle. but now, no respect from me. that maniac caused our 05 season to be a disatrous one. i'm sticking with Hester

send him to houston.......texans will pay him his money. bears are crazy for not ponying up some bucks after what he's done for them.

Donte, I so agree with you. I'm still trippin on Matt Ryan getting 72 Mill!! It's Crazy!! Rookies need to prove themselves man!

he got 72 mil for his draft position. less than half of that is guaranteed. the problem here is that his opportunity (72 million less his guaranteed money) is much greater than another quarterback taken later in the draft.

we should be fine with the guaranteed money bit to his contract. but all quarterbacks should have the same incentive to perform.

hes still getting 32 mil and hasnt taken a snap, rookies need to be paid at most 6-7 mil over a span of 4 years, renewals should then be based on performance

So there are two fair options:

a) all quarterbacks to have the same opportunity to earn $40M over that time period on top of their guaranteed money

b) he should not have the opportunity for $40M performance incentive, and rather something much less that can be agreed upon for all quarterbacks.
