The final score was 24-10. The Jets only allowed 10 points on defense to the highly touted Saints offense. The 14 point differential was due to turnovers by the "Sanchize". When you really analize the game, this was a loss that can make the team's year.
For all of the haters and doubters, we know now that this defense is for real. We held Drew Brees to no TD's without our best pass rusher in Calvin Pace. He returns this week on Monday in Miami, so I expect big things coming at Chad Henne. This defense also kept the team in the game after four turnovers by the rookie. That is a big time defense that can win games for you all year long and deep into the playoffs.
Offensively, the Saints brought 8 or 9 into the box to counter our running attack. Every team has done it against us and this is a major reason why the ground game has been stale this year. However, in watching this season unfold, I honestly feel that the offensive line has been a huge disappointment. They need to step up both the pass and running blocking going into this next quarter of the season. While Sanchez is a rookie, I feel that many quarterbacks just short of Brady, a Manning, Brees or Rivers would have had the same problems he had last week.
After watching the first quarter of this season, Mike Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan pulled the plug on a major trade for Braylon Edwards. This was done for Chanci Stuckey and Jason Trusnik plus two draft picks. In the offseason, the same player was offered for either David Harris or Thomas Jones. I loved those two players we gave up, but I would make this trade over the two that were rumored in a heartbeat. David Harris is quietly becoming the new Ray Lewis and TJ will regain his Pro-Bowl form. Which brings me to how the Jets can possibly win from a loss.
The Jets have a relatively easy schedule the next four games. They have Miami, Buffalo, Oakland and come home to face Miami again. All are teams with 1-3 records. This trade brings in a deep threat wideout who is big and physical. He can block well in the ground game and will force teams to play more cover two defense. This will allow the Jets to run against an honest defense. In the passing attack, you can no longer double J-Co or "Killer" Keller as now we have a legitimate big man outside the numbers as well.
Expect the Jets to run all over these teams late in games after building a lead in each game early. They will set the tempo and allow the defense to dominate in each game against teams that are not as talented or well coached all around.
