Salary cap on rookie salaries

I think they gotta stop somewhere with this. I love that everyone is making money but its starting to get rediculous how much money unproven players are getting before they take a snap. There are future hall of famers that are not making as much in there entire carrier as these kids are making in one check. I think the nfl should take some notes from the nba on caping rookies. If you think about it most rookies don't really come into there own until 4th our 5th yr anyway. So just imagen how much there second contract will b if they where 2 play there whole 50mil contract out it makes u wanna laugh huh. My final note is more power to them cause I want everyone to get all the money in the world cause imma get mine.

Good to see you back in the yard Shaun! I agree with you on the fact they should have a rookie salary cuap. Maybe around 15 or 20 million to spend on all of the rookies contracts combined each year. Then it would be easier for each team to go out and sign marquee players in free agency as well.

I agree. You never know if Matt Ryan's going to be Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf. You need to cap the rookies before a team spends a whole lot of money on an unproven player and then the player turns out to be a bust and the team is stuck with the player. Good point Shaun.

"intire carrier" aka entire career

PREACH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you aint lying Shaun

You couldn't be more on point here. How does a player like Matt Ryan make more than some of the most established QB's in the NFL? It is ubserd.

Shaun, I posted a poll on BoltHype.com and the majority of fans think you are next to get to the Pro Bowl. Its almost ridiculous how overlooked you were when you came out. I know there was only a couple teams running the 3-4 at the time, but c'mon! I hope you and Lights Out both have huge years and both of you guys get to Hawaii.

Thanks for the love its kinda of a big deal that I get chosen to the pro bowl in my eyes. I definitely wanna go to the super bowl first. But I like to think that I'm one of the best in the game, and it's hard to argue that point if I never get to hawaii. I'll continue to work and get there one day.

I agree 100%. Upshaw needs to take a step back and realize that this is a good thing. The money will still be spent - it will just be spent on proven vets that have earned it. Having a top pick in the draft really isn't coveted now, you don't see teams trading up because its not worth the money. They'd rather sign a FA. They need to model it after the NBA. I don't think the NFL players should have much beef with this, if you play until your second contract you will get your money, just like the NBA. Right now teams like the Raiders have so much money tied up for two unproven draft picks (Russell and McFadden) , even if they turn out ok they aren't going to have much room to get other players. Drafting in the top 10 isn't an advantage at all and it is hurting the competitive balance of the league.

Good point Shaun, you're right on...I wasn't sure how players would feel about this but Osi was in favor of it this morning and now you are too - tell Upshaw to let this happen for the good of the league AND the good of the PLAYERS

Dude... I think you were drunk when you typed this blog.

LOL!!!

I couldnt agree more with you Shaun. It truly is rediculous. Those younger players need to prove there self as players. The mony should go to the veteran players that have proven there selves. Just like you siad

Hey, I agree rookies shouldn't get paid that much money, but if Arthur Blank wants to spend that money on a QB, let him decide what he wants. If Matt doesn't work it's Blanks loss not the NFL's.

what bothers me is that some athlete who spells entire career "intire carrier" is making more than a doctor or teacher ever will

Supply and demand. There are plenty of teachers out there. There aren't many people who can do what SP does. That's no disrespect to what teachers do, but that's life: If there are millions of people capable of doing your job, as opposed to a very small handful, the pay will reflect that. SP and all of the other guys in the NFL have earned their paychecks through a lifetime of hard work and preparation. You don't get to the NFL by accident.

I don't think his typos are a factor. He doesn't get paid to spell...Do you? Besides it seems a little inappropriate to critisize someone for something so insignificant. This guy is an athelete, and we have an opportunity to hear what he thinks. If you were interested in what a teacher thought wouldn't you be on one of their blogs? Please you are a hypocrite if you think that your any better then him.

Please the only hypocrites are the players who complain that rookies make too much money... they would do the exact same thing if they could... if they were really concerned about being "fair" they would help out all the old time players who didnt get paid jack because the leauge was just starting and who now cant afford to pay their huge medical bills ... kudos to mike didka for trying but I have heard of VERY few players trying

nice answer you kept it real but the spelling correction was unnecessary. Shaun Phillips is right about the rookie pay which is Ludicrous. Do somethign about it then Shaun, pawns like us have no say. Tell all the vets to do a sit in or something Al sharptonesque.

Doctors should be paid in the millions, the fact that it takes them the longest to get a career and the enormous debt with college and med school is ridicoulous...As well at the end of the day who u gone ask for help a celeb, doctor or an actor...Nothing to take away from athletes who sacrifice their body to have a good living for themselves and family. Im just saying Doctors deserve alot more money than both celebs and athletes. World is in Chaos arghghgh

I have to agree with Shaun on this one. Rookies are being paid way too much just to show up. It's one of the most unsure financial investments in the world, but the salaries keep getting higher. It ends up hurting the mid-level vets who have lasted in the league.

Sorry but I believe that all of you are overpaid, and I think that most of the fans feel that way. I have to admit that it's particularly insane to pay a college athlete a guaranteed exhorbitant amount of money before they step onto a professional field, but I don't consider it unjust that the veteran players, who are alrealy overpaid (as I said), don't share in that same money.

I don't agree, as we have learned or should know by now, many of these players sacrifice their bodies for this game. I don't know if you have ever had surgery before or broken anything, or perhaps just had a friggin cold, it costs a lot to go to the doctors. These atheletes need that money that they get to pay for the issues they may have later on in life. They only get paid this certain amount of money for like 4-10 years tops so the money they get is not long lived. Why do you think they all get jobs later?? Also only a handful get paid big $$. The rest that are average, get way less then that- So being overpaid is trivial, and unfair to dismiss these players as overpaid selfish jerks. You should think in whole not in part.

Yea, they sure do need those big bucks to buy the 10 carat diamond studs I see on more than a handful of players. Sacrifice? I was under the impression that they were doing something that they love to do. I'd say they were extremely lucky that they have the talent to do what they want. Don't get me wrong, I know that most work very hard, and I love to watch great athletes. But I can't afford to go see a game these days. It's not the athletes' fault that they are overpaid, but they are overpaid (in my opinion). By the way, what's wrong with moving on to another career when you are in your 30's? Happens all the time in the real world. I'm just saying.

Sorry you feel that we are overpaid but if u think about it, you're part of the reason. You and your friends and family watch us on tv which allows the tv stations to pay out the money that eventually gets to the players. We def. get more than enough money but we put our health at risk every day and there are only a handful of people that can do what we do and if everyone could do it they would. Thanks for your message and have a good weekend.

are you kidding me overpaid. some of the great running backs like earl cambel can't even walk any more.
how can you say that an athlete that plays the roughest sport, who lays his body on the line, overpaid. Last time i checked doctors cost a lot of money so does physical therapy. that jewelry that you see is a superbowl ring.

Are you kidding me that I am kidding you? Duh -- superbowl ring in the ears? It's my opinion as I said, and none of your arguments have changed my mind, ok?
