Team MVP: The Chargers have an MVP... and he goes by L.T. LaDainian Tomlinson, despite his injury woes a season ago, should be back and true-to-form for the '08 campaign. His bench riding effectively killed Bolts' Super Bowl run last year which proves the obvious- Tomlinson is the anchor on offense. While there are several key guys on the team, L.T. holds the key to the Super Bowl. Break-Out Player: I expect the medium sized Darren Sproles to have an extra large year. Word coming out of camp is the preeminent punt return specialist will keep his job, so look for him to run amuck in the wobbly AFC West. Sproles comes in at 5'6", but he has that Devin Hester-type quickness that can really cause some damage. The Chargers have a lot of speedy guys to run the ball back, but Sproles has that elusive factor which makes opposing special teams coaches lose their job. He didn't have great output throughout last year, but that was more from lack of opportunity. Week 15 against Detroit last year showed he can get you over a hundred total yards and a few scores. Nothing but upside with Sproles, and at the very least he'll put on a showcase for other teams that might want him in exchange for a draft pick or two. Biggest Disappointment: Unfortunately for Bolts fans, tight end Antonio Gates still hasn't practiced and is not game ready. His toe isn't right, hasn''t been since last season. You can't rush him back on the field. I can't see Gates starting the season at full speed. The importance of preseason practice, drills, scrimmages and fake games can't be overlooked. So long he's at 100% come mid-season the Chargers will be fine. In the meantime, Gates on a bad wheel hampers the biggest threat he represents- the underneath passing game. To that end, his injury causes ripples in the offense whose remaining surefire weapon is at running back, where the defense can hone their focus. The Bolts o-line can expect plenty of defenders standing eight in the box. Fantasy Stud: It's all about LaDainian Tomlinson. I don't see something monstrous like 28 touchdowns again, but he's good for 15+ scores and 1300+ total yards easily. Find me anyone that will turn that down. Should be the #1 overall pick in most leagues. Offensive Outlook: Philip Rivers says he's fine, but I'm not sold. Tomlinson says he's fine, but he won't be doing much of anything in the preseason. Gates isn't saying anything, and doing less. The big threats on the team are in question. I don't mean to downplay the rest of the guys on offense, but it comes down to those three and without much depth, the Chargers could have a tough year if the injury bug keeps biting. Chris Chambers will have something to say at wideout and has every opportunity to be a big time number one receiver. All things being equal, glass is half full, living on a non-injury prayer (and in a supremely week division), the offense can put up some numbers and march toward the playoffs with ease. Defensive Diagnosis: Shawne Merriman, Shaun Phillips, Antonio Cromartie. Starts and ends with them. You have the new guy in Antoine Cason ready to step when need be, Quentin Jammer and Eric Weddle are still there, so it's surprising that this Chargers defense doesn't get that much press. They will put the ball back in Rivers' hands quickly and often. They're flying around the field and hitting hard. This defense handled the Colts in the RCA Dome and nearly passed the Pats at Foxboro in the playoffs last year. Defense has only gotten better in the off-season. "Red Letter" Game: Well, that has to be Week 1 against Carolina. Or not. The truth is, and I really don't like pandering to New England, but it has to be Week 6 against the Patriots. The week before they''re at Buffalo, come all the way back to toil with the Super Bowl losing Patriots, then it's off to England to test the Saints. It's a brutal road trip leading into their bye week. If the Chargers can fend off the Patriots and leave London a winner, it will be best case scenario for the Bolts who have an easier second half of the schedule. Projected Record/Outlook: 11-5. The Bolts might let a few slip away early, and could let a few go as they rest players going into the postseason. Chargers should walk away with the division and hang onto the third seed in the playoffs at worst. This franchise has never been so poised to hoist the Lombardi Trophy as it is right now. Some are calling it a make-it-or-break-it year. I don''t know if I'd lay down such a bold statement, but the window is closing quickly. This is their best chance at winning it all. As clich A-A as it sounds, anything less than a Super Bowl appearance will be a disappointment. Parting Smack: Kansas City Chiefs: Sweet Lord, where to begin. Was it ESPN.com saying this team could actually be perfect...ly winless? Jumping over the Chefs (sic) this season will be as easy as South Park's Eric Cartman jumping the homeless on his skateboard. The opening day program at Arrowhead Stadium is going to have a picture of that Monopoly guy standing there in a Chance Card pose with his pockets turned out, the caption will read: "Apologies in advance. Tickets non-refundable." Oakland Raiders: I don't know what wreaks more, the Raiders record over the past five years or Al Davis' animated corpse in the owner's box. I can see a Silver & Black-to-Back losing season which will only add to the mediocrity and alcohol abuse so accustomed to by Raiders fans spanning California suburbs and penitentiaries. What about Darren McFadden, you might say? How did Randy Moss work out? Exactly. Denver Broncos: A team that actually might lose to the Chiefs. At least Denver spikes the water with a concoction that breeds 1,000+ yard running backs every year. Maybe it's the altitude. Gets the team a little light headed. And they would have to be light headed, high as a kite, and stoned to the bajeezus to think they have a shot in hell at breaking .500. The Broncos have yet to fill the shoes of that toothy hall-of-famer named John, and won't anytime soon. - Johnny Heck

  • by all accounts rivers is pre-injury good, stronger, better velocity....LT, rest is best....he'll be ready...sproles and hester look potent....hester running over a cowboys linebacker looked impressive....D-side....stronger than last year...weddle and the kid cason with the rest of the secondary should reap rewards if the defense attacks as it did in the second half of last season....Carolina worries me because of their defense....i see it 17-10 bolts....
    • I completely agree. Rivers sure tested that knee. The guy might be cocky, but he's a tough dude who looks like he can back it up.

As with any team, once your starting running back hits the field and the playbook is opened up, that's when you can truly start debating the pros and cons on offense. You can't get too high or low until the season starts. Just get out with no injuries and at least one win.
  • Lets start with your rules I believe you just personaly attacked every Cheifs Fan out here so, If I remeber correctly we jumped over the bums known as the dolts last year. I have no doubt the Chiefs will struggle this year but I do remeber the over educated UN-Bias bandwagoners at espn said that the Green Bay Packers were way to young and that Farve should retire while he is ahead and oh that the patriots would win the super bowl. As with your team they couldnt buy a superbowl appearence I do remeber 2 years ago when you had the most dominant team in the NFL and still managed to screw it up, and how many playoff games has your coach won why dont you call espn and compare the numbers between Herm Edwards and what is his name oh yeah Norv Turner.. Just rember you statements above because when the youngest team in the stomps your teams !@# this year twice I will write back to ask you how KARMA you bit you in the !#@..
    Have a nice day

    • Come on now, by no stretch did I give the Lombardi trophy to the Chargers.

I am no San Diego homer. Far from it. I am being realistic and basing these rants and raves on past performance.

Fact: The Chargers have not been a force in the playoffs.

Fact: The Chargers absolutely tanked against New England a few years back.

I draw a slight similarity between San Diego's struggle in the postseason and the Colts before they finally got over the hump.

On to Kansas City… yes, Chiefs did beat the Bolts in week 4 last season, sending the team to 1-3. The Chargers looked bad. 'Marty' chants echoed throughout the 'Q'. From there, however, the Chargers went 10-2, while Kansas City went 2-10. That's not a personal attack. Your team was attacked by ineptitude and anyone who spins otherwise is drunk.

Bottom line for the Bolts- I see this season as being the best chance for the Chargers to make it all the way. With the Colts and Patriots, there are many teams in the AFC with a legit shot at the crown. I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

Truth be told, I wouldn't mind seeing a tight AFC West race to the last game.

The Chargers will win 12 games and the AFC West...then choke in the playoffs. Book it! Go Chiefs!!
    • damagus78
how about since the chiefs haven't won anything in almost a decade you shut up and go slit your wrists in a closet?
  • AZScott
All should end well in Chargerville this year. Anything less than the Super Bowl would be a dissapointment.
  • ArrowheadAdam

Well, then they should prepare to be disappointed.
  • ok, cheifs fans that can't remeber...try getting a GED so yu kan undestan dat yur cheifs will be shocked into ree-al-e-tee by a far superior Bolts team....better, deeper and driven this year....this team is indeed better than the Pats of last year.....chew on that....

If the Chargers win the Super Bowl, I'll let you take over our Chiefs blog, Arrowhead Addict, for a day and post whatever the hell you want. That's how sure I am that you guys are going to choke again. Chew on that...
    • You have a deal my friend. If we don't make it to at least the AFC Championship, post the picture on BoltBeat of that one star on your team... you know, what's his name... (is Priest Holmes still there?)

Besides, you should just go back to surfing and eating fish tacos. We know Bolts fans don't really care. After all, you can barely fill up that dinky little stadium of yours. Thought you needed a little more to chew on...

One more snack for ya...learn how to spell Chiefs before you whip out the GED jokes :)

man this sounds like philly and dallas...i like it!
  • if you couldn't get the humor in my spelling poking fun.....hello...here's your sign....you might want to try some herbal remedies....the only, i repeat only weakness i see in the bolts is at center, and newberry is an experienced stud....yes, it's a drop off from hardwick, but not much....never, never has a bolts team been so complete....offense, defense, special teams...even if gates doesn't play, the back ups, esp. manny, are above average in ability and size...so...after remedial training for all you CHIEFS fans...YOU find a weakness....on the team....i worry about the D-coord., but if he directs like the last 11 of last year...oh, yea, we made it to the AFC championship...did you guys......we will be awesome....face it!!!!!
  • Thats it, thats all you got!! go get a GED? I may have misspelled a couple of words and I did miss a word at the bottom of my comments, however I did not miss the fact that Damon Huard made your defense look like a bunch of high school kids again (Damon Huard? ha) and that LT was kept in check the entire game and I didnt see a certian linebacker doing his steriod dance all game I do remeber that and that every fan in the stadium after that game wanted to march over to Norv's house and burn it down. Face it all the praying you might do at night, all the hope you may have, all the money in the world will not allow Norv Turner to lead you to a super bowl, just ask the Washington Redskins. I do remeber the Chiefs going to your house and kicking the @#%$$% out of your Chargers I also remeber LT crying because the Patriots just kicked the $$@^ out the most dominant team in football in 2007. Please have the tissue ready for LT when Derrick Johnson does the famous SM steriod dance in your house.
    Have a wonderful day

Love4DaStar, usually the Bolts are the red-headed stepchild the rest of us in the AFC West just ignore. We all know they have lousy fans and choke in the playoffs, so we usually just let them be.
  • tell that to tennessee, indy, (at indy), and the pats, (at foxboro)....with no LT, hobbled Gates and Rivers playing on 1 leg....remember, (yes, dt584ever, that's how you spell it), it was 14-12 late in the 4th. Also...Rivers is 27-9 as a starting QB, 2-2 in the playoffs....oh, ya'll probably don't know what that is...that's where winners play each other to go to the super bowl....winning, by the way, is where you win more than you lose...the hapless KC chumps, oh i mean cheats, no that's not right either...oh yea, chiefs will flop like a fish on the pier again this year...
  • oh, and that stomped the $$@xx out of the bolts in 2007, as i remember, (there's that word again, spelled right), with 3 to go in the 4th, we had brady and company in 4th and twelve with a 2 point lead, when an idiotic corner didn't just bat the ball down, but intercepted then fumbled, setting up the winning field goal...of course the chumps were watching on tv, as usual
  • Good grief johnny heck, i'm a huge bolts fan, and agreed with a bit of what you said, but honestly, can't even get the schedule right, please. i lost respect for the post as soon as i read your gaffe about the bills trip, it's AFTER the pats game, and then they take off to england straight from buffalo. come on now, a little fact checking might be nice. and rivers knee is FINE, that is the least of my worries. Gates will be good to go by the start of the season, and the only real concern is the o-line in my opinion. w/o hardwick we suffer, need to get him in there. and chiefs fans, come on now, do you honestly believe you have a chance to beat us? please be real with yourselves, last year's defeat was a fluke, getitn used to Norv's offense, now we have all the chemistry in the world, gotta get that lombardi now.
    • Slow it down, guy.

I switched a few games up, that's my bad. You're right- the Bills game is after the Pats. Slight oversight, but the point is still valid. It's a coast-to-coast battle then off to London. At Miami, home for New England, off to Buffalo then over the pond.

If that little gaffe is all it took for my post to lose 'respect' in your eyes, well, I don't know what to tell you except a hardy congrats for having a stellar ability to nitpick.

Thanks for the insight. I hope Rivers' knee does hold up. Looked good against the Cowboys.
      • To be honest it was a pretty good post. Now, I don't know how much you read up and follow the Bolts. And me, reading multiple articles a day and blogs and posting on message boards, and constantly getting info. So having a lot of knowledge on the Bolts, I just noticed a few things here and there with your post, nothing huge. Thanks for doing the review though, good stuff. The main thing right now is keeping us healthy throughout camp and then during the season. We'll be fine.
  • ArrowheadAdam
    Placard_complete_small
I don't think we'll beat you guys, but I do know two things: A.) We have much better fans; and B.) Nervous Norv and Co. will pull another choke job in the postseason.
    • Oh wow, now your bragging about how good your fans are, great. Have awesome fans, see how that helps on the field for ya. I'd rather have the best GM in football, best RB, best TE, best OLB, best CB, things like that that actually win you football games. And it was "Nervous Norv" that kept the course during the season and stayed calm and didn't get rattled and got us back on track to the playoffs and beat the dirty titans and the Colts. The latter being with a backup QB and RB on the final drive? Now THAT is good coaching. And would have beat the Pats if not for injuries, so, I'll take Norv any day over Herm, especially if Norv knows how to at least manage the clock. lol.
  • This was fun, something to do before the season starts. I know the Chargers will be at the top of the division and I truly believe that the Chiefs will be right behind them. I think the bronco's have some real problems and the raiders...well they are the raiders. Good luck to the chargers and I hope someone from the afc west goes to the super bowl it has been awhile.

    DT584EVER
  • ditto, kiddo.....let the games begin!!!!!! start the season NOW!!!!!!!
  • Agreed. The AFC West has been bad for a few seasons now. The NFC West is slightly worse, but that's not saying much. Like I mentioned before, let's have a knockdown dragout fight for the division.
  • GO BOLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! 15-1
