In the first professional football of the season, John Madden lavished all over him, the crowd cheered him on, and teammates laughed at and for him. Two touchdown passes, some crafty footwork, and intense staring by Jim Zorn were the highlights of Colt Brennan's debut for the Washington Redskins. If last night's performance was any indication, the D.C. Dreamboat has certainly changed minds about his status as America's favorite third-string quarterback. Of course his body of work was against fellow third-stringers and practice squad heroes, but 9-10 for two TD's is good on any level, not to mention in an NFL national television debut. In all, the Redskins' QB's completed 19-21 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns, with most of that work being put in during Brennan's comeback effort. As for fan reaction? My homeboy from New Jersey sent this text immediately following Brennan's second touchdown. "The new Favre." With three more games to go in the preseason, Brennan is already pushing for a back-up QB controversy, a controversy that on the merit of football talent, is as important as the one brewing in Green Bay.

Good game by Brennan. Wonder if we'll see him do anything against NFL starters. We'll just have to wait and see

He looked great but at the same time he had Malcom Kelley and Devin Thomas on the outside going against 3rrd stringgers. If he can continue to perform like he did they i'll put more value into it. Good for him though i loved watching him in college

Where is the ultimate system QB? Pulling some 9-5?

As of last year he was busy backing up in the CFL throwing 1 TD to 7 picks. Yikes

Same as saying Chris. Leak. in reference to Tim Tebow. Colt is his own man, give him that opportunity.

If him going against 1st stringers is anything like his bowl game performance, put him on the bottom of the depth chart

Great article-I think another performance like that might put him into competition with Collins for the backup-though I will be surprised if he wins it.
  • I might sound crazy but I think Brennan was the best quarterback last year in college and I still believe him to be the best quarterback in the draft. People tend to overlook quarterbacks labeled as "system guys", or guys who never won big games. But I judge them based off of the talent level they might not have had and how many of their starters are playing in the NFL right now. People were high on Jamarcus Russel because of his athletic ability in college, but he was also playing with guys who are in the NFL right now. His work ethic, and football skills are now coming into question. Meanwhile, Brady Quinn, whose best team mate in college is now helping the Chicaogo Cubs in the pennant race, was questioned because he never one a major bowl game. The reasoning is ridiculous. Colt Brennan always competed and picked apart opposing defenses, and given the chance at the next level, will do the same.

What killed Colt was his getting chewed up and spit out by GA in the BCS Bowl. If he had had a good game there I bet he would have been a first day pick

Colt had a rough game against UGA, that's for sure, but I think he would have done much better if his line wasn't made up of twigs and pixy dust. That line had been faulty all year, but looked decent with Colt making the plays. UGA exploited the issue and sent Colt running for his life. What's worse for the draft... a bad game or a blown out knee?

wjbrown got it right. That Georgia game KILLED him. If he had had a solid game i'd say he could have gone top 3 rounds but he got destroyed which as i watched the game was more to Gerorgia's credit than to CB's lack of talent. Hawaii was so overmatched it was like watching a pittbull swing around a chewtoy
