Taking down the Bears

Before I get into our game today, I want to mention last week, when we finally got our first road win in Green Bay. Everyone said we were too young and inexperienced to do it, but Coach really emphasized how important it was not only to win on the road, but to get a winning streak going. Yo-yoing back and forth between wins and losses is what really kills you. So we went out there and showed them what we could do, and we finally got a nice winning streak going for us.

This week, against the Bears, I was a little nervous but also excited about the challenge of going up against one of the best linebackers in the game, Brian Urlacher. All week my teammates were teasing me. They kept asking if I was scared of him and telling me not to fake an injury to get out of it. But I felt confident. I'm just as big and bad as he is, and when my teammates were clowning me, I told them that he should be shaking in his boots, too. I was excited to show him what I could do.

The game was electric. It was great to see all those fans there, and everyone was so into it. This year we're showing them that this team is for real, and everyone is responding in a very positive way. It was a fun atmosphere from the first kick-off to, of course, the very last second. The ending was like what you would see in Any Given Sunday or Remember the Titans or something. It was a storybook ending that I couldn't have written any better myself.

Especially during these kinds of games, the most important thing is to put personal goals aside, and just win as a team. I really felt that the whole team did just that today, which is why we came out on top. Everyone was giving it everything they had, especially because we knew we'd have the bye week to recover. There were a couple heartstopping moments, which we could definitely do without. I'd prefer to have a blowout, but this made for a really memorable 5th game.

I have to say it was surprising and disappointing the first time Jason Elam missed. But it reminded us that he is human, despite being such an established player. When we gave him another chance, though, he dusted himself right off and came back to help us win the game. Douglas also had an amazing return on that last drive, and Ryan and Jenkins hooked up for that perfect pass downfield. Those two things combined to give Elam his second chance. Jenkins deserves a lot of credit there. You could see him turn to face the clock as soon as he caught the ball, making sure to plant his feet and get out of bounds with just that one second left on the clock. Perfect.

Our defense was also key - they were better than our offense. They ALWAYS show up at the critical moments of the game, like that last goal line stand that we needed so desperately. Watching them be so physical and do anything and everything to stop the ball was amazing. On the drive before that, all the offense needed to do was run out the clock, but we just couldn't do it. Instead, we fell back on our defense as a crutch, knowing they would bail us out. We should really stop thinking that way, but it's good to know they're there to back us up.

Now it's time for a little celebrating and then some rest. Next week I might actually get to sit down and watch some football. What games will you guys be watching?

The Drill opening up holes for the Burner. You guys controlled the game via the air great work.

Awesome win, my MSU boy Jerious deserves a lot of credit also, 178 yards in 4 kickoff returns is incredible. I'll be watching the MLB playoffs and flipping to the Pats-Chargers game during commercials. Great win today, hope you guys can keep it rolling.

In fact, after Bears scored with 11 sec. left to take the lead, they were so afraid of Norwood that they squib kicked the kickoff. This allowed ATL to start at 45-yard line, setting them up for the comeback.

i agree j rock played a HUGE role in helping us win that game. that boy is FAST

Great Win! You had my bro all nervous and sweaty over this game! Great Game, Great Win! I'll be watching my favorite team Bills go against the Chargers!

whats football without a lil suspense and drama. and a lil degree deoderant will clear up that perspiration problem

The Drill got jokes, hmmm? :)

Congrats on the win!! Ummm although I only got a chance to watch a little...I'm sure it was great!!! I have to say I will be watching my Alma Mater 'The Ohio State' play Michigan State!!! Either at home or at Hudson Grille (more fans, more fun) It should be a good game...

Today was a great game beginning to end. And the last 11 seconds my heart is still fluttering! The commitment from team and organization is definetly there. It seen in the complete turnaround the team has done in less than a year. So from me everyone deserves a smack on the ass for a job well done.

As for games next week, I will be at buffalo game. Enjoy the bye week! And hip hop weekend here in Atlanta. See you around town.

thx for the props im def excited to help bring a winning spirit back into atlanta

Such a dissapointing win for a Bears fan like me, but congratulations. You guys played a great game and, again, showed that our defense can't hold leads.

lol ya it sux for DA BEARS but you guys ot a good team and will do fine

Thanks man you're awesome. good luck in the rest of the season.

This was a great win for you and the falcons! I though it was over when i saw that touchdown from the bears, but you guys didn't give up and that makes me real proud to be a falcons fan

Great post, Ovie. We in Atlanta know you're just as big and bad as Urlacher and you made us proud! Enjoy the win and let's get a big V next week over Philly!

Great game. Congratulations!

You are an unsung hero in ATL... We appreciate everything you give! Keep it up-

thx bog, it was difficult at first making the transition from tailback to fullback in college bc i didn't receive nearly as much praise, but i have learned to find my joy in other things like putting someone on their back or seeing my tailbacks make a great run or by most importantly WINNING

Living near Chicago and growing up a Broncos fan I was excited to see Elam get that 2nd chance, especially against the Bears. Sadly enough people in this area shed their colors quick and when the Cubs got knocked out of the playoffs people quickly went from blue and red to orange and black(dark blue...lol) All I heard was "the Bears are in first place" well so were the Cubs! I knew Elam would knock it in if he had another chance. I'm glad you guys gave him the opportunity. You are a young and exciting team and I hope you go far!!!! NICE WIN!

thx pudge

Thank you Ovie, and the rest of the Falcons for a great game today. The only Falcons game a that had me as emotionally strung out like this one was the '98 championship game against the Vikes. Awesome indeed.

Congrats Ovie. Now that you've faced Urlacher what are your thoughts? How do you feel you played against him? Is he as big and bad as everyone says?

he is a great player but i dont think he is the thumper that he used to be. but he still figures out how to make plays. it was an honor to play against what i think is a future hall of famer

AwesomeI Awesome! Awesome game! I would even give it a fourth "awesome", but I am a bears fan and we lost. I was pretty confident that we had this win especially when you guys were scoring with field goals and no touchdowns. Even though Chicago remained behind in points, I didn't get nervous until we didn't take the field goal attempt and missed that touchdown! I remained tense until Robbie Gould took the field in the final seconds and made the goal. (you can always count on Robbie!) Then I started celebrating because I just knew we had a win! LOL! What a game! There are only two recent games that I wish I had taped. Chicago vs. Arizona (a couple years back) when Urlacher stripped the ball away from Arizona and the AZ coach made that infamous speech and this game vs. Atlanta! It was also nice seeing the "guy from yardbarker" play. I saw you once in the huddle and again when you, um....tripped. :)
Now that you are done with us, I hope you continue your winning streak. I happen to like your team's "comeback kid" story in the NFL.
Next week, I'll be watching my Bears vs. Minnesota and my #1 team the Cowboys vs. St.Louis. Also, thanks for the blog. Most of the other athletes don't respond to the fans like you do in your yard.

i hear ya sista girl. i apreciate the props even though u are a bears fan. and for the record i DID trip, or got pushed or something. and i always respond to the fans bc its a blessing and a privilege to be where i am and do what i do

wow. Way to change a lock "L" to a "W"!
You know Brian Urlacher wasn't shaking in his boots..But did you get a chance to say "Look who's laughing now?"

Congrats on the win man. That was great game and it was awesome to watch

CONGRATS!!! Great game. OMG was I shocked.

good win

That game was the stuff that movies are made of! Words really can't do it justice, that much action in the last 11 seconds. The 19th is my birthday so since the falcons arent playing I wont watch any football. You get some R/R you deserve it.

Ovie,

I really enjoy reading your blogs. They are interesting and well written. The Falcons are really bringing me a lot of joy this year. Keep up the good work dude!!!!

thx ben ill make sure to keep the wins coming
