The Importance of Staying Focused

A game like this only comes along once in your career. It's so important that you stay focused on seizing the moment. I try and ease my mind of thinking about the game but its impossible, I just can't stop thinking about kicking some ass.

LT reads us a poem before every season. The name of the poem is "The Inner Voice". Everytime I think about it I get gassed up and ready to fight lol. The bottom line is that I'm ready for Sunday. And I know that my team is also. So tune in, it's going to be a dog fight (no offense Vick).

"Every athlete has an inner voice of pride.

It is the voice only athletes can hear, pushing them to the brink of exhaustion, demanding excellence and condemning failure.

Failure, understand is the driving force behind athletes.

Every athlete has experienced failure and now train so they will not experience it again...

So when failure laughs in my face as I try to earn the respect of that last repetition, it must realize...

each time I train, I not only hear, I answer ...

the inner voice."

F 'em up, SP.

Shaun...won't be rooting for the Chargers tomorrow..sorry to say..that said...here's to a good game, especially from you and Cletis.

Welcome to Mass Shaun! Im also 100% behind the Pats, but just wishin you a good game! Dont forget to take the the 40 minute ride down to Wareham with Coop haha!

Good luck on Sunday Shaun! I can't wait to see you guys go out there and kick some Patriot ass. I have faith in the Chargers and you can bet I'll be cheering you guys on loud and proud! Have fun and play tough. GO CHARGERS!!!

Maybe Billy Volek can play the Jeff Hostetler role? Maybe cortisone shots to LT, Gates, and Rivers can save the season? Maybe the more aggressive defensive approach that your playing now as a team can be the difference? Or maybe just maybe you, Shawn Phillips, can be the difference tomorrow? Whatever the case, just get it done and make history for yourselves!

GO BOLTS!! Remember 1994 when no one gave the Chargers a chance on the road in Pittsburgh either....

My bad. Shaun. I always confuse your name with Lights Out's first name.

fuckin lay the wood on Brady, Shuan, that would be awesome. hopefully you guys can pull it out.

RETALIATION IS A MUST!!!
GO CHARGERS!!!

SHOW ME YOUR LIGHTNING BOLT!!! GO CHARGERS!!!!!

SP, I'll bet you're settling into the team hotel (where is that, by the way; are you in Boston or Providence? :-D) ready for tomorrow's tilt. Beware, though; if you haven't noticed by now, it's going to be quite chilly by kickoff! Not that you're not used to it, having played in the elements in northwest Indiana (and at home in Jersey). ;-)

I don't know if you will see this before the game, but if you do, I would like you to ask Nick if he has any insight on how Jayme felt after the Laffs, er, Leafs pulled that one out at the Garden Thursday night. Thankfully, the Bruins responded by beating the Blueshirts today on Willie O'Ree Day. Willie O'Ree's story is a great one; even Snoop Dogg is a fan of his! For future reference, if you have a chance to view it (which I doubt), the Sports Museum of New England has a Willie O'Ree exhibit.

I would like to wish you personally the best of luck tomorrow, but obviously I can't do the same for your team. However, I can hope for a good game. I don't think anybody wants to see a blowout. Okay, I take it back: plenty of people want to see a blowout, but let's face it, blowouts aren't as compelling (duh!). :-D

I will send you a private message with contact info; if you see it before the game, please drop a line.

Have a wonderful evening, and don't lose too much sleep over anxiety! And of course (sorry), Go Pats! ;-)

--Eric

sorry man but i gotta go for the pats.. but it'll be a good game man

great poem and go get the pat's!!

Kick ass and take names, dude. You guys aren't every bit as good as them -- YOU'RE BETTER. I've seen it the last 8 games. You've made a believer out of me.

Good luck & GO BOLTS!!!

i can't root for you for obvious reasons, but best of luck to you! enjoy chilly new england!

Well if you're Tedy Bruschi...a game like this comes along six times in your career. And that's why you will once again fail to beat the best football team on the planet. Veteren leadership and big game experience along with the best QB and head coach to ever walk an NFL sideline will be far too much for you and your boys to overcome. The only things I wish you is health. Other than that...I look forward to the Pats ending your season once again. Tell Igor that's what's up!

People thought you couldn't beat the Colts. Now please just beat the Pats and then the Pack so I can have a merry Chicago Bears holiday season.

Here's a really good motivational speech for football that I saw on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3xbdaGD4dk

It makes me want to go out and kick some serious ass.

Here's another good one from the movie Any Given Sunday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6NPP4RsDbk

Hurt 'em Shaun. We're all counting on you to end this Pats menace.

The key for Sunday's game is the Interior Defense! SPECIFICALLY JAMAL WILLIAMS!

The New England offense kicks the crap out of the DT's with continuous double teams. By the 4th quarter the interior defensive line is dead! (Giving Brady even more time.)

Watch and observe the punishment they inflict on Jamal Williams!

SOLUTIONS:
1. Rotate fresh defensive line.
2. Stunt Blitz outside linebackers into the interior! HELP BIG JAMAL WILLIAMS! Make sure Jamal is on the field on 3rd downs.
3. Place Antonio Cromartie on Moss and Jammer on Stallworth
4. Play bump and run with the Patriots slot receiver.
5. When Brady is in shot gun they usually have one RB next to him for protection. Blitz and overload the interior opposite side of the RB with the middle LB.

I wish the Chargers could play more 4-3...with 2 DT's.

New England is sooo tough inside because Brady is strong in the pocket. Blitzing up the middle will force him to leave the pocket and help the DT's/NT's from being worn down.

GO Chargers! You guys can do this! Take down Brady and the offense!

Shaun, if you're reading this know that out here in SD everybody believes you guys can get the job done. Most of the media is picking against you guys again, but they said the same thing last week and you guys won and I have confidence that you guys can do it again. The people of SD want a championship just like you do, so go out there and kick the Patrots ass. The Chargers haven't won a title in 44 years and lets hope we don't have to wait a year longer to get it done.

Make Brady miserable and show the media that the Lombardi Trophy is your goal and that nothing ,not even a 17-0 team can stop you guys from raising it up at the ends of the season. Show the media that you guys are the real deal and that the Chargers are still the most talented team in the league. If you guys play up to your abilities and focus I'll know you'll get the job done. Shock the World!

Remember we in SD believe and in the end I think I'll see yet another team (the Pats) that has been Thunderstruck!

Hey SP -
You guys are going to rock the world tomorrow! WE BELIEVE!!!

Thanks for all the plays you have been making over the last two seasons. Clutch. Good luck tomorrow. Its not only the Team that feels you can win tomorrow but all of the San Diego fan base as well.

Go get em Shaun, good luck and godspeed.

Know in your heart of hearts that greatness is upon you. Seize every opportunity unrelentingly. May the glory of victory fill your spirit Oh and kick some as tomorrow. It's yours for the taking. So snatch it up and don't let go! Go Shaun! Go Chargers!

I want you to know you and your teamates are in our hearts and minds and even prayers for tomorrow. I pray that noone, yes NOONE gets hurt, and that you all have the kind of game we know you are destined for. SUCCESS to you and my BOLTS tomorrow! WE ARE SO PROUD!

I know you wont be able to read this before the game, but ALL my thoughts are with you guys! Win or lose, I as a fan, am already extremely happy with where the team got. Just thought I'd throw in my two cents, so kick some Patriot ass!!

Yo SP...keep doin work. Nobody is giving us a shot in hell to win. Nobody believes in us except US. Time to shock the world! Go out and have a great game bro...the whole city is pulling for you guys!

Like you said Shaun, a game of this magnitude comes along once in your career. I truly hope you go out there and kick some Patriot ass. Its not only a chance to knock off one of the greatest teams in the history of all sports, not just a shot at revenge from last year, but a shot to play in the game many kids can only dream about playing in in a few weeks.

So here's to you going out there any beating the Patriots on their home field tomorrow! I hope, and know that I'll be seeing the best ball 95 has ever brought to the field.

GO CHARGERS!

my inner voice says KICK BRADY'S ASS! how about another pick 6?

Great Blog. Thanks for your thoughts. Good luck in the game & hope you beat the Pats! GOBOLTS!

SP, I know your not reading this before the big game. When you read this today, you 'llbe thinking about the Super Bowl. You played great today! You upset the mighty Patriots! Every critic that doubted your team is in shock! Way to go! How did it feel after you threw Brady around today? Mean, Lean, Agile, motivated! Go Bolts!

This is the year of the Chargers!
I love your post..awesome poem by LT!
GO BOLTS!!!

As pumped as I am about the game tomorrow, I can only imagine how you feel. Go out there and knock Brady's head off tomorrow!! GO BOLTS!!

SP...what's up!?! Congrats on the awesome season thus far. Go out there and show Brady a thing or two about turfism! We believe! We aren't giving the Patronizers anything...it must be taken! This game is theirs to lose! We are in their way of a perfect season! Let's make the headlines read "ALMOST PERFECT". GO BOLTS!
CoopDeVille

I think it would have been a different outcome if LT was playing and Antonio Gates was healthy. I'm impressed with the Chargers future.

However...Chargers management has failed the players for the following reasons:
1. Firing Drew Brees
2. Firing Marty S.
3. Letting Junior Seau and Rodney Harrison go, because now they are the key pieces to the New England defense. The heart and soul of San Diego left...and came back to beat them.

I hope they treat LT, Meriman, and SP better...or maybe they will do the same.

Dude, some of your insight is legit, but last time I checked, SD did better than they did last year, and the three points you make here are wrong. We couldn't have gotten to the AFC Championship game had they followed your advice. Also, when you give SP a "Charger game plan" as I've seen you do in past posts, it makes you look foolish. Do you not think there are coaches/ players being paid millions of dollars to do that for them, and that know a heck of a lot more than any of us. I know you're a scout and really good at football, but give it up. Let the SD coaching staff do that... sorry dude.

I want to say that I am so proud of my Bolts this season!
We may not have made it to the Superbowl...but there have been a lot of adjustments.
I am proud to be a Charger fan!!
Please let the team know the true fans stand behind you all!!

I'm proud of the guts the Chargers have had all season and the fight they have put up throughout the playoffs. Shaun and the boys should be proud.

MrBest7 I don't see how firing Marty was a bad thing. I know he is a good coach and a good guy from what I have heard, but he hasn't been able to win in the playoffs and Norv did better than Marty did the two times he made it into the playoffs with the Bolts. I would also like to point out that in 2005 with a similar schedule to the one the Bolts had this year Marty went 9-7 and couldn't get into the playoffs, while Norv went 11-5 and went to the AFC Championship game.

Letting Drew Brees go may have been a mistake, but Rivers has done well enough and has a lot of guts.

hate to say i told you so... no chance against the pats... well maybe you might have if LT didnt wuss out

Weak- are you kidding me? Your insight was probably the most uneducated I've seen in a long time. Obviously, you're a Patriot homer, and cannot appreicate a great team/ player when you see it. Hate to tell you, I'm sure LT had been training for this game for 20 years, and to not be able to play- absolutely killed him. Your team is old- great, but old. It takes a real homer-fan like you to spew what was in this post. You obviously don't know much.

Tom Brady "You would have to take me out on a strecher not to play in that game"

Phillip Rivers had emergency surgery a week before the game... thats toughness... LT just stood there on the sidelines... not even cheering on his team... stop being a sore loser and accept the fact you lost

and why not put LT in on a fake in the redzone? you have the most feared rb in the NFL and he just sits on the sidelines... call a play action to draw the linebackers in ... terrell davis had a few downs in the super bowl when he couldnt even see! how can we be sure it was even LT on the sidelines? he was stading there with his visor on... he could have paid some clubhouse guy to stand there for him... not cheering on his team.. not giving pointers to players ... doing nothing

Well maybe next year eh SP!

As a bolt fan I must say that I was dissapointed at the perfomance we put on at NE. I couldn't help but wonder if all the parties, girls, and late nights contributed to our overall dissapointed season. I mean come on you go to Hyde the Monday before the big game? You have a once in a lifetime oppertunity, playing in the league, a dream that so many have yet you just party it away. Everyone deserves to have life, and yes you do have the right to party, As a fan I just ask that you have a little class. But what can I expect from someone that in the off season looks forward to coming in the house Sunday morning after a night of parties only to do it again. Next year lets show the league who we really are #95. An team with some class.
