I'm not going to get too wee-weed up (love that Obama term) over the Redskins' performance at the Meadowlands Sunday, especially since no one predicted a win anyway. This glass is half full. Jason Campbell threw for more yards (211) than the Redskins gained in total offense in last year's opening game (209), offsetting the decline in the rushing game. Washington held the Giants to a field goal in the second half and was effective against the Giants running game. Antwaan Randle El was impressive playing from the slot, his natural position. He should match up well against most nickel backs and linebackers. But a loss is a loss. This game was not a good loss like last night's Oakland loss against San Diego. But there's time to correct and Washington has the people to do it and a soft schedule ahead. The most interesting read from the game by NJ.com's Mike Garafolo. NJ.com is Giants-centric, but Garafolo had a few game balls for Redskin players."DT Albert Haynesworth. He's the real deal, people. And how about the 'Skins lining him up at DE on passing downs a few times? If you're Giants LT David Diehl, I'd say it's pretty safe you can assume a bull rush."LB London Fletcher. One of the most underappreciated players in the league. And, like Haynesworth, one of the rare cases of money well spent by Washington." Garafolo panned both LaRon Landry's and DeAngelo Hall's performance on the big play by Giants receiver Mario Manningham. Manninghan's rookie year was a bigger disappointment than Malcolm Kelly's. So I was surprised, make that shocked, by his run after the catch on that play. I'm not sure whether Manningham showed nothing preseason. Is that good, or did he just made our secondary look stupid? Time will tell on both counts. The Real Reason The Redskins Lost to the GiantsThe New York Giants have a superior front office! They don't turn over coaches. They didn't fire Tom Coughlin when things were tough. They worked with him and went to the Super Bowl. The Redskins fumble their coach hire--of the Giants defensive coordinator no less--and end up pitting someone coaching his 17th game against someone coaching his 209th.The Giants have roster resilience. They lost Plaxico Burress and Osi Umenyiora and still made the 2008 playoffs. You won't see them trade valuable draft picks in a panic for a T.J. Duckett or Jason Taylor when they had bench strength can step up. The Giants have faith in their back-ups, so they keep their draft picks. Washington, not so much.Washington has good players, too. They must be good. We bring back when we let them go. If Derrick Dockery, Fred Smoot and Renaldo Wynn are good enough to bring back, they were good enough to keep in the first place.Tell me again why Ryan Clark is good enough to play for the Super Bowl Steelers, but not as good as Adam Archuleta. The Redskins ownership sabotage their own odd aproach with panic deals. (Must...resist...Burress...reference) If Washington kept the picks wasted on Duckett and Taylor, they could have pulled the trigger on deals for Jay Cutler or Mark Sanchez and might have had enough to overpay the Bengals to trade for Chad Ochocinco. (Ugh)And you won't see New York make cavalier changes of offensive schemes as the Skins did when they switched from the Coryell Downfield System to the West Coast Offense, thereby setting the clock back three to five seasons before a big payoff. The Giants are New York's team, but it's the Redskins who build rosters like a Broadway cast, with a few headliners and those anonymous little people in the chorus. If this were Broadway, I'd buy an overpriced ticket and go see a show once. This is football. We're on a long term quest for a title. It's those anonymous, front line people in the chorus who make the hits. Superior front offices always lead to superior on-field performance. Come on, JasonThis is Jason Campbell's do-or-die year. His performance against the Giants was meh, ok. His biggest impression from this game is always going to be that second quarter fumble returned for a touchdown. Both head coach Jim Zorn and NJ.com's Garofo point out that Campbell failed to step up into the pocket to avoid the turnover. Zorn said in his post-game comments that Campbell did well overall, but tape of that turnover will live forever. A winning season will offset the memory. I still believe in Campbell. He has the stuff to be a starter. However, little things are beginning to annoy me. More on that tomorrow.Become a fan of hog Heaven on Facebook. click here.Follow me on twitter.com/SkinsHogHeaven.

Redskins In Super Slow Motion

No, the title is not a comment on the offense running sluggishly in the Giants game. Let's just get that gag out of the way quickly. (In fact, the faster the Redskins offense moved, the better Jason Campbell did. In plays when the offense lined up in the shotgun formation, Campbell was 14 of 17 for 155 yards and 1 touchdown. But that's neither here nor there.)Anyhow, one...

Randle El Remains a Force

Before the opener against the New York Giants, coaches and players told me they believed that Antwaan Randle El could lead the team in receptions in his new role as a slot receiver. They figured Randle El would win many battles while often matched up against linebackers and, well, Randle El definitely is off to a good start. In the 23-17 loss to the Giants, Randle El tied Chris Cooley...

Jason Campbell Says He's a Leader, Dangit

(By John McDonnell - TWP) For the second time in a matter of months, the particularly vocal among us have been arguing that a key D.C. sports personality is not fiery enough as a leader. First, it was Manny Acta, who defended himself by saying that bluster isn't necessarily effective, and that anyhow he would never fake it for TV cameras. "I have very good control of my...

The Go-To Guy Turns Out to Be ARE

After all the preseason talk about the young receivers and the important spark they might add to the offense, it was 30-year-old receiver Antwaan Randle El who had the biggest impact in Sunday's season-opening loss. Supplanted by Malcolm Kelly as the team's starting flanker, Sunday marked the first game Randle El didn't start since November 2007. The end result? The most...

Zorn: 'Bar Is Set Very High'

The New York Giants went 12-4 last season, won the NFC East and are widely considered to be one of the league's top two or three teams this season. I know the Redskins did not play well in their 23-17 loss in Week 1 at Giants Stadium, but the despair many fans have expressed on the Insider, Internet message boards and sports-talk radio seems a tad premature to me. The reality...

CBSSports: Redskins Flat Offense Needs Boost...Desperately

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/12201846 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- For Jim Zorn's sake, this season better not be déjà vu all over again. Otherwise, he can start looking for another job. Image: http://images.cbssports.com/u/photos/football/nfl/img12201892.jpg *Jason Campbell's expression...

Questions linger about Zorn's direction

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. | Year two of the Jim Zorn era started for the Washington Redskins in the same way as year one, a road loss to the New York Giants. A few of the lingering questions from the disappointing 2008 season looked familiar, too. But some new issues for the Redskins and their coach also appeared in Sunday's 23-17 defeat, in what could be their last visit to Giants...

At Giants, After Further Review

Room to improveWithout full time to digest the entire chattering class, that likely will come tonight, I have some additional thoughts on the Giants game.First, it sucked watching the Redskins lose. It would have sucked to lose to anyone on Opening Day after an injury free preseason dedicated to the improved awesomeness of the Washington defense and the no really look how much better...

Walk Before You Can Run: Washington Redskins Improve (a Bit) in the Air

The bad news is that Washington's aerial attack wasn't good enough to win their first meaningful game of 2009. While the defense bottled up the Giants run game, Eli Manning did just enough through the air and the Redskins running backs underperformed just enough that New York could hang on to win 23-17.  The good news? While it was by no means a flawless performance...

LeSean McCoy, Antwaan Randle El, & More: Week Two Fantasy Sleepers

Before we get started, let’s take a look how last week’s sleepers fared (click here to read the original article): Mark Sanchez - 18-31, 272 yards, 1 TD, 1 INTAhmad Bradshaw - 60 yards rushing, 0 TD; 3 receptions, 11 yards, 0 TDSydney Rice - 2 receptions, 17 yards, 0 TDBrandon Pettigrew - 0 receptions, 0 yards, 0 TD While Bradshaw may not have had the biggest game, I...

Why Jim Zorn Is the Wrong Coach for the Redskins

I don't dislike Washington Redskin coach Jim Zorn.  He seems like a decent enough man. But you know what?  17 games into his coaching career, the jury has deliberated and they have come back with a decision. Jim Zorn is guilty on three counts of being not fit to be a head coach in the National Football League. Two years ago, Joe Gibbs quit as the head coach of the Redskins...

Dan Daly: Trick plays don't lead to treats in the opener

Everybody loves trick plays in football, especially when they work. The Redskins experienced both sides of it in Sunday's 23-17 loss to the Giants - the thrill of Hunter Smith running into the end zone on a fake field goal try and the agony of Antwaan Randle El getting dumped for an 11-yard loss in New York territory on an end-around pass that turned into an end-around sack....

Redskins @ Giants - First Quarter Thoughts

The opening drive wasn't great. Some of the things that have frustrated fans of this team for the last few years were on clear display: the defense had a chance to force the three-and-out, but let the Giants stay on the field Carlos Rogers dropped what looked like a sure interception the defense wound up on the field for a fairly long (7:19) drive But here'...
