From the Midway:
The
Bears started Kevin Payne and Al Afalava at safety through the
preseason, maybe because Danieal Manning was out with an injury, but
maybe not.
Lovie Smith has confirmed that he will use Danieal at kick returner
and nickelback this season, but before his injury this preseason, he
was said to be the starter at free safety.
The Bears have loved what they've seen from sixth round pick Al
Afalava at strong safety, and Kevin Payne at free safety. They both
have looked good in the preseason.
Maybe the Bears will use Danieal Manning in nickel situations and
kick returner, or maybe they'll put him at free safety as well as
positions the listed above. Manning is entering his fourth year with
the Bears and this is a contract year for him, so he must show
everything he's got.
I think Payne and Afalava will start week one and Manning will be
used in nickel situations and as the kick returner because the Bears
need more help at cornerback than at safety.
We'll see what the coa...

Simmons on Cutler (and the picks)
I'm not a big Bill Simmons fan. I prefer sports writers write about sports and keep pop cultural references to a minimum. He does make a solid point about Jay Cutler in his first picks column: Chicago fans have been wondering why I dumped them and adopted the Packers as my NFC North team and Super Bowl pick du jour. It came down to one thing: I didn't want to...
Hiding behind humor
Although Charles Tillman failed to divulge any new information about his status for this weekend, his post-practice meeting with the media was classic.
"I think chances are slim to none," said Tillman when asked how he felt. "I think I'm done for the season, I probably won't ever play a snap of football again. Did Eric Mangini name the starting quarterback...
Not taking the bait
If Aaron Rodgers avoids the rush like he dodged questions about his relationship with Jay Cutler -- the Bears are in trouble. The Sun-Times' Brad Biggs gets an "A" for effort, for unsuccessfully trying to pull some personality out of the Green Bay quarterback.

Chicago Bears: Remember The Titans?
Much has been made in the days leading up to the 2009 NFL season about the Chicago Bears.
Whether it's new quarterback Jay Cutler and the circus that surrounded his Denver departure, or the apparent lack of a big play receiver, or the health of the secondary, there has been no shortage of reasons to talk about this group of Bears before they even step on the field.

Bears-Packers feud will boil again with rival QBs
Some things in life are unavoidable, like road construction and heartbreak for Cubs fans. That's why Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers may claim to be friends. They may text-message each other and sound sincere when they speak of their mutual admiration. Make no mistake, however, these two are bitter rivals.
Nothing nasty between Bears' Cutler, Packers' Rodgers
