Vikings inserting bonus provision in new deals

The Minnesota Vikings made defensive end Jared Allen the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL last month, but also provided themselves plenty of financial protection in the deal. It's the type of protection that could become increasingly popular around the NFL as teams deal with high-risk players in the post- Michael Vick era. One of the key elements to Allen's six-year, $74 million contract is a provision, pre-approved by the player, that allows the Vikings to convert an $8 million roster bonus Allen is due to receive in 2010 into a signing bonus. In such a case, the team would recoup its money from the player and the signing bonus would count under the salary cap for the remaining years of his contract. Under rules of the collective bargaining agreement, signing bonuses can be recovered by a team when a player violates his contract; a roster bonus can't.

In the aftermath of Atlanta's disastrous situation with Michael Vick, Minnesota has included provisions in contracts that provide them financial protection if a player goes terribly awry...

Was there any mention in the article about a provision that lets the Vikings recoup money if Allen continues to sport that Sopranos Johnny Cakes mustache?

Good for Minnesota. More performance clauses need to be put in contracts.

very very true fiver & this part i found very interesting!!

To protect themselves, the Vikings included language in the contract for the first two years that allows them to terminate the deal if he's arrested or suspended. In addition, Allen's $15.5 million signing bonus is guaranteed only for injury. Signing bonus money is considered payment as a promise from the player to fulfill the terms of his contract.
However, roster bonus money can't be recovered because it is considered "earned" income under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Good deal. All contracts should have those stipulations. Thanks.

You would see a lot less players "taking plays off" and doing stupid things (aka breaking the law) if contracts were lined with performance and behavior clauses. I hope they get even more focused on performance than JA's, make them players earn their paycheck. Shaun Alexander might be jobless, but he still has a big smile on his face for all that guaranteed $$$ in that contract he signed a few years back.

Yeah.......all of that guaranteed money up front needs to come to an end, too. As you said, too many players are taking plays off or whole games off or , like in Pacman's case, whole seasons. If these clowns worked anywhere else and did that crap, they would be fired.

Couldn't have said it better myself!!!
