LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The San Francisco 49ers' signature player in their 3-4 defense is inside linebacker Patrick Willis, a two-time Pro Bowler and 2007 NFL defensive rookie of the year. "He's one of the top linebackers in the game," Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said. "He's very active, a lot of intensity, [and] a great tackler with good awareness." Willis leads the Niners with 86 tackles and two interceptions, and is tied for second on the team with 2.5 sacks. "Just watching him and coach [Mike] Singletary, they're very disciplined," Cutler said. "They're very sound and will make you beat them. They're not going to go out and beat themselves." The Bears do catch a huge break since San Francisco will be without starting cornerback Nate Clements. With Clements out for the second consecutive week, Tarell Brown is scheduled to make his third start of the season at cornerback -- perhaps a matchup the Bears could look to expl...

Game Breakdown: Bears at 49ers (11.12.09)

Bears offense vs. 49ers defense The Bears, but specifically Jay Cutler, have not performed well in prime time games this season.  I think that has more to do with the caliber of opponents they’ve faced and less to do with the time of the game and the national television audience.  The Packers and Falcons both played [...]

Jay Cutler throws 5 picks, Bears fall to 49ers

Frank Gore ran for 104 yards and a touchdown, Jay Cutler threw a career-high five interceptions with his last coming in the end zone on the game's final play and the San Francisco 49ers snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Bears 10-6 on Thursday night. Niners quarterback Alex Smith won for the first time in eight starts since Week 2 in 2007, 17-16 against St. Louis...

Jay Cutler needs to step up for the Chicago Bears

If the Bears are going to make a run at the playoffs this season Jay Cutler has to step up.  He has completed 182 of 286 passes (63.6%) for 2,046 yards with 14 TD passes and 12 INTs (83.8 QB Rating).  Cutler has also carried the ball 23 times for 109 yards (4.7 ypc) with [...]

The Morning After: Bears-Cardinals

Thoughts on a 41-21 beatdown at the hands of Kurt Warner … Bears need more than Cutler. In the first quarter, Jay Cutler threw an absolute strike down the sidelines to Devin Hester, then followed it up with a great TD pass to Greg Olsen. This is Cutler at his best: throwing with strength, accuracy and precision, [...]

49ers notes: Elk Grove's Briggs thought S.F. trade was 'done deal'

SANTA CLARA – Patrick Willis and Lance Briggs side by side in the 49ers' linebacking corps? That combination seemed so likely last year that Briggs and Willis sat down together at the 2008 Pro Bowl to talk about the possibilities. "I thought it was a done deal," Briggs said Tuesday on a conference call. "I thought when the trade was offered, I didn'...

Semi-Fictional Jay Cutler Is the New Semi-Fictional Philip Rivers

All I wanted to do was call Vanderbilt gay, but I like the direction this went. And while it doesn’t fit in with the “Whatever” version of Jay Cutler we’ve envisioned at KSK, the @NotJayCutler Twitter feed is probably as close to reality as good ol’ @KingLaserface. Which is to say: VERY close.

The Bears better have their "A" game tonight

The Bears inconsistencies are well documented. It starts with the lines on both sides of the ball and it filters out to the so called skilled positions. In order for the Bears to right the ship tonight they need a max effort from both lines. Tommy Harris needs to commit to playing the type of football that once had him as the most feared defensive tackle in football. On offense the...

A Change in Philosophy

I have to admit it.  I'm fascinated by Thursday night's game in San Francisco.  The Chicago Bears are only a few inches from plummeting off the cliff of the 2009 season and now, on only a three-day turnaround, must ignore the media's call for accountability and fans' call for pink slips to provide a major effort in front of a national audience.  The...

Bears Whipped by Arizona. Time to Clean House?

Today, the Bears were embarassed for the second time in three weeks, as they lost to Arizona 41-21.  Quick recap: Can't tackle.  Can't cover.  Can't rush the passer.  Top to bottom, horrible performance by the D.  Offense was OK, but still kept making stupid drive-killing penalties.  Offensive line is still horrible as Cutler...
