With Terrell Owens gone, Roy E. Williams steps into the number one receiver role in Dallas. Some may be concerned with that, but I see a different issue. My problem would be the number two spot. Correct me if i am wrong, but Patrick Crayton will most likely fill that void, right? Crayton is a slot receiver and in my opinion has not shown what it takes to be a starting receiver in the NFL. Dallas has many weapons on offense - from our new 3-headed running attack to our star tight end - but...

I am still hoping that Miles Austin will fill that slot. He is a much better compliment to Roy than Patrick Crayton. I have to admit that he still has a lot to prove on the field but I really liked what he showed last season. I am not concerned about any lack of talent there. That said, I couldn't disagree more with even trying to hire Tory Holt. He is just too old and has shown too much deline over the last two seasons to even take a flyer on him.
  • You can get every stud wide receiver in the league and it still wont help because you need a quarterback to throw it to them.
    • cowboyswin08
      Placard_complete_small
what does that say for your quarterback? If you are who I think you are, yours failed to match Romo's numbers in what was his worst statistical season yet.
  • Who cant win a playoff game? With T.O, Witten and Roy Williams?
  • Any quarterback can put up those numbers with those receivers
  • cowboyswin08
    Placard_complete_small
that is a paper tiger argument and if you don't know it we don't need to discuss it. Besides, Witten was injured for three quarters of the season, Roy didn't know the playbook well enough and was hurt for six of his starts and I would think you would know about T.O.. You don't have to be a fan, but he is a top ten quarterback by any reasonable standards. No question that he is at times reckless with the football but in his two seasons as the starter he has been nothing short of great.

He's just a hater, man. Ignore him. He's going to say the same thing even if Romo had won a playoff game or SB by now. I'm really surprised that he has so much time to worry about the Cowboys when his own stinking team cannot when a Super Bowl. I don't think the Cowboys are too concerned with the receiver issue or they wouldn't have shipped T.O. outta here. Crayton or Austin can fill that slot and we'll have Felix Jones coming out of the backfield. How would any team feel having to deal with Felix in the flat catching a screen pass?
      • cowboyswin08
        Placard_complete_small
I can see that. I thought I remembered him from when I used to be here much more often.

I didn't even think to address the Felix part of the question. The first Washington game and the Greenbay games were proof that Felix didn't even have to touch the ball to make defenses freeze for that one painful second to free up another player. He will also take pressure off of Roy. Besides, I am not convinced that a healthy Roy Williams needs the pressure taken off of him. Crayton was a very solid number two in 2007 and even if Miles can't make the step up we will be ok.

I agree. If Felix is full speed like he was in the first few games this next season, teams are going to have a lot more to be scared about than Roy Williams. That dude just has it.

Granted, Austin and Crayton probably don't put fear into the hearts of DBacks around the league, but it's better than having the media circus that was T.O. here and then him screaming because he thinks he wasn't getting the ball enough. It's going to be very interesting to see how they handle this situation.
    • ItsWhatever
Well I know you guys have a running game, but I'd like to see Garrett work Felix in much more. And who might grab that #2 receiver spot... Does Crayton really have no shot at retaining the job?
      • BowlBound
        Placard_complete_small
There is talk that Felix is going to start over Barber this next season. That remains to be seen, but to have him and Barber on the field at the same time would be the way to go. That would scare the hell out of a lot of defenses there. Yeah, I think that the job is Crayton's to lose, too, but he's going to have Austin breathing down his neck just because of the speed factor.
        • Robbo24
          Placard_complete_small
There's talk also about the infusion of players able to work in the Wildcat Offense, and let us not forget Tashard Choice my boy. Felix, Tashard, and Marion to shore up the youngsters looks good for now with the upcoming draft. I for one is optimistic for the coming season. Martellus need's to keep his day job and move some chains and keep Whitten honest with a liberal mix of Miles, and Roy. Tony aught to be alright. I hate to put a daper on this party, but Jerry, need I say more. Jerry's going to find a way to get his Drunk @$$ on the field and mess up the show dad burnitt.

Patrick is the most knowledgable of the offense he has that going for him but the young guys including Isaiah Stanback will push old dude to step all the way up. The problem as I see it is Tony growing the f*ck up. You guys play rough in the East and he doesn't have time to play around. Getting kneed in the back by the Giants, and losing 44-6 to the Eagles will be tolerated for so long. I'm going on record by saying if he doesn't correct his lack of focus he's going to lose the team and the fans.
  • cowboyswin08
    Placard_complete_small
I think that the job is Crayton's job to lose right now. He doesn't have the speed that Austin brings but he is an excellent route runner and has reliable hands. As for Garrett working in Felix, well, you and every Cowboys fan across the nation. He was really impressive for his six outings. Like I mentioned earlier, even in that first Washington game he made a difference. He was brought in, ran a wheel route and took a db and a linebacker out of coverage giving Romo a clear shot to Crayton (I think it was Crayton) down the left sideline for a touchdown. It is such a blessing to have a homerun threat from anywhere on the field. I have to admit, though, Garrett really messed up with him. His blitz coverages were solid from what I could see on TV, (for what that is worth), and defenses really took note of his presence. He really needed to get him ten to fifteen touches on offense every game, more if the defense wasn't stopping him.
    • DeWare
I can see it being an open battle going into training camp between Crayton, Austin, and even Hurd. I'm hoping that Austin will seize the opportunity. We know after a few seasons know what Crayton can do. (besides open his trap too much) I think he's best suited as a slot guy, #3 WR. Austin can be more of a downfield threat with big play potential. (think Alvin Harper??) Don't forget about Hurd either. The coaches have always been high on his potential and he seems to put in a great bit of effort to improve.
  • Lol...the cowboys arent too concerned about their receiving core or they wouldnt of let t.o go? The only reason why they let him go was because romo and witten cried to jones that they wanted him gone or they would of kept him. They need him. There is plenty of question marks about your receivers! I have too much time on my hands to be worrying about the cowboys? Whos the one thats always on the Eagles threads?

Roy Williams stats per game played are number one receiver numbers. HE has just missed games in all but one of his seasons. Last year he had to learn a new offense and for six of his nine starts in Dallas he was dealing with a lis franc injury. We traded a first and third for him. We also gave up a seventh but we got a seventh in return and that moved us up in the seventh round. We paid a first and a third. If he has another season like last year I will agree that we got robbed but anyone who thought he would show up and preform day one doesn't understand the NFL. As far as MIles Austin goes, anyone who follows the Cowboys knew and cared who he was even before the 2006 Seattle game. He has mad potential and appeared to be on his way to the number two slot when he was injured.
    • meatgoat
      Placard_complete_small
I disagree.I thought Roy Williams was overrated back when Eagles fans wanted to trade for him last summer. I don't think his stats indicate anything more than an OK option for a #2. Carrer averages by game : 4rec 58yds .5 TD. That's to say he scores a TD every other game or 30tds in 70gms. Those are pretty pedestrian numbers. You guys are gambling most of that low production comes from playing with the Lions but then I guess Calvin Johnson doesn't have that problem. As for Miles, he was virtually non-existant his first two years. To be fair the guy is obviously gonna be a nice WR this year but it's a stretch to say that was clear all along. If so, why sign T.O.? Why trade for Williams?
      • cowboyswin08
        Placard_complete_small
Well, the Dallas scouting crew has raved about his potential since he was acquired. He was non-existant because he was the fifth option in Bill Parcells scheme and under Garrett he was fourth. ( I am counting Witten as a receiver above him). He or Crayton will be solid at the number two slot, in my opinion. YOu are absolutely correct that we are gambling that some of his numbers will improve with other concerns for opposing defenses. That is part of the risk and I for one agree with taking it. I think the decision to sign T.O. had no connection to Austin whatsoever. Austin was always talked about as number two to someone else. We signed T.O. for the same reason the Eagles did. He was a phenom and we gambled that his attitude would be better in Dallas... and it was for two years. Frankly, I believe that winning another game or two last season would have taken care of it then too. However, we didn't and we paid the price. Trading for Williams was done because J.J. wanted to be sure that he had a superstar for years to come.

      Placard_complete_small
I would prefer to see Austin get it also, but he is still all potential. He has yet to prove it for an entire season. Besides that, Crayton gets a bit of a bad rap. He was the number two receiver in that great 2007 offense. He was also the numver two guy for the first few games last season and the offense was doing very well with him there. The first real drop off in the offense, to me, began w hen we first acquired Roy Williams. Then you add Romo getting injured and the mess that was Brad Johnson and Brooks Bollinger and I think the job is Crayton's to lose. I hope that Austin steps up and steals it, but I am not worried if he stays at number three.

  • demetairsbell
I don't know what Dallas' brain trust was thinking when they brought Roy Williams into the fold. Crayton hasn't progressed as expected but the Cowboys have the receiver they need in Miles Austin. Despite pressure from outside influences, they should have kept T.O. and have Austin as their number 2 receiver. I hate to sound callous, but Roy Williams is not a go to receiver. They'll find that out soon enough.

    • cowboyswin08
      Placard_complete_small
By whose definition? Statisticly you can't even begin to defend that statement. (that Romo sucks) I can't argue that he is reckless at times but his numbers destroy McNabb's. Which game of Romo's should have earned him a benching anyway? You don't have to be a fan of his but that doesn't give you carte blanche to make ridiculous statements. I can't stand Mcnabb but I wouldn't say he sucks and I can make a much better argument for that than you could for Romo. The only statistical advantage that Mcnabb has over Romo is fewer interceptions. Yards, wins, TD's, yards per attempt and per completion, ond the biggest one of all quarterback rating are all in Romo's favor.

Now I will give you the vbenefit of the doubt on that last statement and take this time to let you know that even if you were the owner of the Cowboys you could not do what you said you would do. The Salary cap won't allow it, amongst other problems.
      • ItsWhatever
My little brother could have posted "romo" stats, especially if he had a great running game/O-line his whole career, and T.O, Roy Williams, Jason Witten. Comparing Romo to McNabb at this point is just not doable. Let's wait and see what Romo does this year, ( who still has better receivers then McNabb's ever had), and see if he can actually lead his his team come December and into the playoffs.
        • cowboyswin08
          Placard_complete_small
that is a ridiculous response. First of all we do not have either a great running game or o line. Both are good but neither is great. Roy didn't know the playbook and was hurt for 6 of his eight starts so he wasn't worth what his name implies, no t to mention that he was only here for 3/4 of one season out of his two and a half. As for comparing stats, I didn't. I showed you that all of the stats went in Romo's favor. That is different but even if I was comparing stats these two have as close to identical schedules as you can get in this league and are both in pass heavy offenses. It would be a very fair way to look at these two. No question that Romo still has to prove some things in this league but by any reasonable definition he does not suck.
        • BowlBound
          Placard_complete_small
That weapons response is getting old. He was in the freakin' NFC Championship game 5 times and lost four of them. How did they get there if the Eagles had no weapons? Now, I will admit that their defense was a big part of McNabb's success or he wouldn't have as many wins as he does. But, their offense was still good enough to get them in all of those title games and what did he do when they got there? He won one, but look at his stats in the other four.
  • cowboyswin08
    Placard_complete_small
The weapons response is not just old. It is also a complete farce. It was from the first time it was uttered. I mean is Peyton a paper tiger then? Why couldn't Matt Leinart succeed in Arizona? Why didn't either Brad Johnson or Brooks Bollinger succeed? Why did the Bengals offense disappear when Carson Palmer went down in that 06 playoff game against the steelers? How is it possible that the Packers couldn't score without Favre?
