National Signing Day. It’s a chance for college football uber-dorks like myself to geek out in February, seven months from the opening kick-off. But when it comes down to it, this day is nothing more than the one day in which fax machines aren’t an obsolete technology. National Signing Day is nothing but hype.
Yes, this is the day in which national powers like Alabama and Ohio State restock their talent pools. And yes, a lot of the highly touted recruits do end up having great careers. But make no mistake about it, the number of stars next to a recruit’s name on sites like Rivals or Scout isn’t the end-all, be-all for what kind of career he will have.
These are high school students of 17-, 18- or 19-years old, and they practically get put through the same meat market the NFL puts its prospects through before the draft. So much emphasis is put on a recruit’s caliber, 40 time, height and weight that it’s easy to lose track of actual football ability.
