Inside linebacker Donald Butler should remain the Chargers’ top priority this coming offseason. That is, if Donald Butler allows himself to be. The former Washington Husky is set to be a free agent once the league year begins in the month of March. But rumor has it that the 6’1”, 242 pound linebacker holds himself in high regard. David Canter, the agent for fellow San Diego Charger Eric Weddle tweeted on Wednesday morning that Butler will get Ellerbe numbers on the open market. That Ellerbe he is referring to is Dannell Ellerbe of the Miami Dolphins. Last offseason, Ellerbe signed a lucrative deal with Miami. The terms were a five-year contract worth $34.75 million, with $14 million guaranteed. @Shamrock_Dan I’m sure he’ll see Ellerbee numbers if he hits market — David Canter (@davidcanter) February 26, 2014   Those numbers are enormous, especially considering the Chargers’ current cap situation. The Bolts figure to have roughly $3 million in cap space at this time, and that is of course not considering several cap casualties that could soon arise. With that said, committing that much money when there are several other needs that San Diego has might be detrimental, whether or not Butler is priority number one on the offseason checklist. There is no denying that the inside linebacker has shown a lot of potential and could be a future multi-time Pro Bowler should his career pan out well. But if Butler is commanding that steep a price, he may very well do it in another uniform.
