A.J. Smith is known as a high risk/high reward general manager, and one of these moves turned out to be a good thing for the future, but was a gamble at the time it happened.  This is in no particular order in terms of where they rank.  They are just the ones that came to my mind first. 1. Failing to re-sign Drew Brees: Brees suffered a torn labrum in 2005, and the Chargers chose to move on with Philip Rivers.  Since then, Brees has made it to five Pro Bowls in six years, has led the NFL in passing yards three times, led the NFL in touchdowns three times, led the Saints to a Super Bowl title and was named Super Bowl MVP. 2. Hiring Norv Turner: Turner had a .414 career winning percentage in nine seasons as a head coach before he was hired. 3. Placing Shawne Merriman on waivers: Merriman made the Pro Bowl in 2005, 2006 and 2007, was injured in 2008, had a subpar season in 2009 and was injured again in 2010 before being placed on waivers.  This move worked out, but it seemed like Smith...

Dean Spanos, You Are A Disgrace

At this point, it's not even about whether Norv Turner gets fired. But this "will they/won't they" soap opera is pathetic. First it was "No playoffs, no Norv." Then it was about whether they won their last 5 games. Then it was "Detroit will decide his fate." I would have rooted against winning at Oakland if I thought for one second that...

PFT: It's 'all but certain' Norv Turner will be fired

Saints record setting in win

NEW ORLEANS -- Drew Brees set a merciless tone with relentless, aggressive, pinpoint passing and the New Orleans Saints shrugged off injury risks, barreling into the postseason with an all-out effort. "Every facet of our offense is clicking right now, but yet you're constantly finding ways to advance it," Brees said.

Brees and Dalton Are Great But Rodgers and Newton Are Tops

Cincinnati Bengals rookie Andy Dalton has shown a lot of poise and promise, but Cam Newton deserves the ROY nod. I have this theory–some people don’t watch sports for the love of the game…they watch just to have something to argue about. And in my mind, arguing for Drew Brees to be MVP or Andy Dalton to be offensive rookie of the year is an example of that. There...

Chargers are bringing back Norv Turner & AJ Smith

The Chargers missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season, both years they were expected to be Super Bowl contenders let alone make the playoffs. The failed expectations had many fans believing it would be ...

Chargers Announce Norv Turner & AJ Smith Will Be Returning ..Championship? Probably Not

Here is  a quote from Chargers Owner Dean Spanos on his reasoning in bringing back head coach Norv Turner and GM AJ Smith. “These two men give us the best chance to get back to the playoffs.” Good luck with that Charger Fan.

Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford all top 5,000 yards

Remember back in the day, when a 5,000-yard passing season was a huge deal? Not anymore. There were more 5,000-yard passers in the 2011 season than there had been throughout NFL history prior to this season. Drew Brees broke Dan Marino’s record last week, and today Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford joined Brees in the…

Extra points: Pundits: Saints will march

The headline at ESPN.com says it all: "Meet Superman, Detroit." That's Drew Brees, strange visitor from another planet. Or Purdue. It's an easy story line for Saturday's wild-card game in New Orleans, especially after the Lions gave up six touchdown passes to Green Bay's Matt Flynn. Here's what they're saying:

Chargers to keep coach Turner, GM Smith (AP)

San Diego Chargers President Dean Spanos has decided to keep coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith despite the team missing the playoffs for the second straight season amid increasing fan discontent. Spanos made his decision Tuesday, two days after the Chargers finished 8-8 by beating Oakland to keep the Raiders out of the playoffs.

Turner would be 'excited' to return to Bolts

SAN DIEGO—For his final news conference of the season, San Diego Chargers coach Norv Turner wore the Super Bowl ring he won as offensive coordinator of the 1992 Dallas Cowboys.

Why Rodgers gets my vote for MVP

Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees put up strong cases for winning the NFL's most valuable player award. Journal Sentinel Packers writer Tom Silverstein explains why he chose to vote for Rodgers over Brees.

Time To Award The NFL's MVP and LVP Award

Oh hey, it's MVP voting time! Now, a lot of voters will tell you that they really thought hard about who to vote for, and that Drew Brees really made a race of it at the end. But as an unauthorized MVP voter, I don't have to con you like that. I took four seconds to decide on my MVP. It's Rodgers. And I don't care that Drew Brees broke all those records and won...
