Al Michaels weighs in on his broadcasting future
Al Michaels Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The 79-year-old Al Michaels has every intention of continuing his “Thursday Night Football” duties in 2024 and maybe even beyond that.

In a new interview with Mike Freeman of USA Today, Michaels confirmed that he intends to continue calling Thursday games for Amazon next season, and he does not feel like slowing down anytime soon.

“I feel good,” Michaels said. “I feel healthy. I feel fine. I told Amazon that I’d do three years and next year will be three, and I’m definitely doing it. We’ll see after that.

“I still love this job. I still get a charge out of going into a stadium and watching the best in the world do what they do. I’m still really happy so that’s the big thing.”

Michaels remains a venerable presence on broadcasts, though he has been criticized by some for a perceived lack of energy in recent years. Recently, NBC made the surprising decision to replace Michaels for the playoff broadcast he had been slated to do.

In spite of all that, Michaels can still quip with the best of them. If he wants to keep working beyond 2024, Amazon would probably be happy to have him and the stability he provides.
