Albert Haynesworth was released by the Patriots on Tuesday

The New England Patriots released defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth yesterday, who was one the big additions of the off season.  The 6’6 350 lb. DT was no where to be seen in the second half of the New York Giants game this past Sunday and when asked about the Bill Belichick said it was a rotation situation.  Haynesworth, once known as the most dominant defensive tackles in league is now seen as one of the most under achieving, lazy football players of all time.

Last season, Haynesworth failed multiple conditioning test for the Washington Redskins which kept him off the practice field for weeks.  The Patriots acquired the former first round draft pick in hopes to revive his career like they had done for so many others.  We all thought it would be another Randy Moss or Corey Dillon situation where nobody wanted to take a shot on the player, but the Patriots turn them into an all star.  But that didn’t happen.

Belichick failed on this attempt but it didn’t come at much cost.  The Patriots gave away a future fifth round draft pick and didn’t have to pay very much, as the Redskins took on most of the defensive tackle’s 100 million dollar contract.  But Haynesworth wasn’t the Patriots only risky and headline grabbing pickup this offseason.

New England also acquired wide receiver Chad Ochocino from the Bengals.  Many thought the connection of Tom Brady to Ochocinco would become a weekly hookup and the two would put up huge numbers.  Well that hasn’t happened either and in fact, Ochocinco hasn’t recorded a catch since October 9th against the New York Jets.

Ochocinco, once one of the top wide receivers in the league and easily one of the most outspoken players in NFL history, hasn’t been able to produce anything for the Patriots.  He hasn’t caught a touchdown all year and gives people reason to believe, he is next on the list to be cut.

But I think New England should keep Ochocinco around just for security.  I know they are virtually getting nothing out of him but this team is built to go deep into the playoffs.  If for some unfortunate reason a wide out or one of the tight ends goes down, Ochocinco can step in.  He still has the ability to make plays but just isn’t fitting in the Pats offense.  I think Belichick will find ways for him to become a presence and help this team.

With Brady at the helm, look for Ochocinco to finally come alive sooner than later.  I say sooner because the Patriots are on a two game losing streak.  The team knows they have to make some slight adjustments on offense and many on defense so don’t be surprised if you see 85 making plays for this team.
