Quarterbacks are dropping like flies on Sunday. First Michael Vick was ruled out of the Cowboys-Eagles game with a concussion, and now the same has happened to 49ers’ signal caller Alex Smith. Smith was scrambling when he took a vicious blow from Rams’ linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar. The 49ers could struggle without Smith after building their offense around him. Second-year player Colin Kaepernick has replaced Smith. Kaepernick had played just 50 snaps coming into the game, mostly coming as a wildcat quarterback. Watch Smith’s game-ending injury in the animation below.

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith already cleared his first hurdle toward returning to the field after sustaining a concussion Sunday in the 49ers' 24-24 tie with the Rams. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that Smith got a good night of sleep and that his symptoms were "good." The first step in getting cleared to return after a concussion is the absence of symptoms...

49ers' Smith not sure how he lost job

Alex Smith is trying to understand how he lost his job as starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers a month after being named the NFC's offensive player of the week. A passing comparison: Sam Bradford and Alex Smith

In less than two years, Jim Harbaugh has made the San Francisco 49ers into one of the NFL's premier division bullies, rivaling only the Patriots and Ravens (coached by his brother John) for their level of domination of their own division. Combined, the three teams have lost only two games to their rival teams. At quarterback, these three teams couldn't be more different...

Concussions have been one of the top priorities for the NFL over the last few seasons. It was a rough week to be an NFL quarterback as football fans saw Mike Vick, Jay Cutler, Ben Roethlisberger and Alex Smith all go down with injuries. Vick, Cutler and Smith all suffered concussions while Roethlisberger was the “lucky one” and only suffered a sprained right shoulder. While the 49ers and Bears are currently in first place in their respective divisions, the Steelers...
