The San Francisco 49ers have apparently come to the realization that Alex Smith needs to move on. Unfortunately for them with Smith's salary and the current salary cap rules, it doesn't make sense to do so until 2009, however, at this point most people would say that it should have been done before the 49ers drafted him. The good news for San Francisco, however, is that you are not alone. In fact, only 11 of 1st picks since 1936 have made the Hall of Fame. #9 on the list is Tom Cousineau (1979) who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills, but because they were "rude" decided to play in Canada instead for twice the money. He did eventually come back and play in the NFL for 8 seasons, however, just for the Bills failing to match the money and hospitality of the Canucks, he goes on our list.
