When asked to describe what he thought of his new receivers, San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith said, “It’s like waking up on Christmas…” With a team that’s packed full of talent at the running back and tight end positions, the only thing that may have held them back from grabbing their first Super Bowl trophy since 1995 was a talented wide receiver on the other side of Michael Crabtree. Instead of grabbing one WR to complement Crabtree, they decided to grab three. This offseason they’ve added Randy Moss, Mario Manningham and rookie A.J. Jenkins, who they grabbed with their 1st round pick. Add these players to current wide receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and up-and-comer Kyle Williams and Smith has more than enough talent at the wide receiver positions.

The addition of Manningham made complete sense for the 49ers after they lost Josh Morgan to the Washington Redskins earlier in the offseason. Before being injured in the fifth game of the season, Morgan had established himself as a great possession receiver who was reliable when the 49ers needed him. Manningham should bring that same reliability. The Moss signing was a bit more peculiar. The 49ers had a similar type of player last year with Braylon Edwards, but after putting up weak numbers in 9 games, Edwards was let go. Moss is a much better player than Edwards and still has the ability to be one of the best WR in the league if he puts his mind to it and is used the right way. Maybe a change in scenery and some motivation from coach Jim Harbaugh will do him some good.

Regardless of how Moss is able to play this season, the 49ers WR core will be much stronger in 2012. No longer will opposing teams be able to gameplan for only one WR threat on the field. And they’ll also have to try and defend one of the best TE in the league in Vernon Davis. The 49ers ended last season 29th in the NFL in passing yards per game with 183.1 yds. Look for that number to be in the 230-260 range next year.
