The Minnesota Vikings will not allow their star running back to suit up for a single preseason snap, a smart move for the franchise, but a frustrating move for fantasy football owners. “There are no setbacks. That’s not the reason we are doing this” stated head coach Leslie Frazier. That part is encouraging, but while Adrian Peterson may be ready to play on opening day (September 9th against the Jaguars), it is unlikely that he will walk into the workhorse load he is accustomed to.

Early on, expect the Vikings to employ a two back system, with AP and Toby Gehart splitting the duty. As Peterson rounds into form, his number of touches should increase, while Gehart’s will decrease. The savvy fantasy football owner will draft Gehart before the Peterson owner can, and sell him high after a week or two. Gehart is being overvalued (Peterson had only missed 3 games in his career before last season) and with a value that figures to peak in September, he will be a great trade chip.

Trend spotting: Adrian Peterson has average 1,480 yards and 14 TD’s every 16 games played in his career. He may not be the elite fantasy RB in September, but it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish, and I expect Peterson to round into form sooner rather than later.
