Another round of “FIRE ANDY” chants broke out during the Eagles 30-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Reid’s time in Philly may be getting short. As hurricane Sandy bore down on the Delaware valley, a storm of a different kind was brewing in Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles were thoroughly outplayed in every aspect of the game by the undefeated Atlanta Falcons en route to a 30-17 loss. The Eagles are now 3-4, having lost their last 3 straight games. It was “an embarrassing performance” according to head coach Andy Reid. It’s the second time in as many games that Reid has employed the word embarrassing when describing his team’s performance. As a result, loud chants of “FIRE ANDY!” could be heard throughout the stadium. In the coach’s press conference, similar questions were asked. ESPN’s Sal Palantoino asked if Andy Reid thought that it was time for the players to hear another voice, in other words, a new coach. Reid responded in kind by asking Sal Pal if he wanted to talk to the players. For all the focus on the coach, in my opinion there’s plenty to look at player wise as well. The team seems uninspired and deflated. You also don’t get the sense that there are too many people concerned about the fate of this team. There’s no cohesiveness, players are playing as a team and there’s seemingly little leadership to overcome it. For 13 seasons we’ve watched Andy Reid stand at the podium in his post game press conferences with remarkable assuredness and confidence. That confidence seems to be waning lately, as even Reid looks as if he’s seen better days and maybe know that his time to fix this team is growing short. Once again, Michael Vick and the offense were not good. The offensive line was not improved and the offense could barely get on the field in the first quarter. But that was largely due to the defense, who often came up small in 3rd down situations and took bad penalties in untimely situations (repeatedly on 3rd downs that led to Atlanta 1st downs). If you expected the Eagles D to play better and be more aggressive, you were sadly mistaken. Instead of the 20 points a game they had been giving up, they gave up 30. I wonder if Juan Castillo secretly chuckled today. This season is in serious peril. The jobs of Andy Reid and Michael Vick are too. With the New Orleans Saints and Monday Night showdown looming next week, it will be interesting to see what moves Reid makes to get this team on track. The sense of panic and desperation is certainly ratcheting up with the fans, you’d have to imagine it will be the same at the Nova Care Complex. The Eagles are in crisis, and you get the sense that players are beginning to point the fingers at teammates and not in the mirror. That’s not a common trait of an Andy Reid team, but it’s unmistakeable right now. And that’s not something easily fixed.
