Andy Reid has had a rough week. After the tragedy of losing his eldest son, he came right back to work coaching the Eagles. Then he suffered through a lackluster performance by the Eagles first team in their first preseason game. As if that wasn’t enough, a controversy erupted when his agent came to town declaring Andy Reid the Eagles coach for life.

While the comments didn’t come as a shock to me, the fact that Bob LaMonte brought them to the public certainly did. Now, after a terse rebuke by Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, you have to wonder what was behind the comments.

Clearly if Reid’s agent was in town to leverage the recent surge of support for Andy Reid into a contract extension, it was poorly timed and borders on poor taste. But was this a sanctioned move by Andy Reid, or an agent being opportunistic?

Whatever the case, though, Bob LaMonte has put Andy Reid and Jeffrey Lurie in a bad position.

What Lurie said in his statement Saturday, that the coach, players and executives should be evaluated on a season by season basis is right on the money. Lurie may want Reid as his coach for life, but Andy Reid still has to live up to his end of the bargain. Last year, Reid didn’t. If the Eagles don’t make it to the playoffs again this year, a change might just be forthcoming.

Andy Reid might have known that LaMonte was in town to lay the groundwork for an extension of his contract, but I’m not sure Reid was aware of how public LaMonte would take the case. I’m not sure Reid would support the actions either.

I like Andy Reid. I know I’m not in the majority here, but it’s hard to dispute the positives that Reid has brought to the Eagles even though he hasn’t won a Super Bowl. That said, this move for an extension is very poorly timed and completely unfounded at this point, no matter who was behind it.

Andy Reid hasn’t earned a contract extension at this point. If he turns this team around and gets them off to a good start, then maybe that will change. But that time hasn’t come yet.Similar Posts:
