On Sunday night, the Jets swung-and-missed on free agent safety Reggie Nelson, who after a two day courtship decided to re-sign with the Bengals.

With a glaring hole remaining in the secondary, Antonio Cromartie chimed in on Twitter, suggesting a potential option for the position — himself.

In a series of tweets, Cromartie not only urged Nelson to join the Jets, but, after the team was spurned, hinted that he may shift from cornerback to free safety in 2012.

Guys u have to b patient. Reggie is making his decision on his time. This is a big decision.

I guess I’m moving to FS

The reason I say I’m moving to FS is because Kyle is becoming a good corner and I don’t mind the move

It’s unclear if Cromartie is demonstrating wishful thinking, or just let the cat out of the bag to his 135,000+ followers.

There are a few reasons to think a move to the backend would suit Cromartie. He has the ideal speed and range necessary to become a centerfield-type of safety, and his long 6’2″ frame would probably present many ball-hawking opportunities.

However, there’s one characteristic of his game that makes this discussion all but moot, and that’s his continued unwillingness to tackle. Throughout his career, Cromartie has been labeled soft by pundits after failing to stick his nose in a play, evidenced by this classic whiff in the 2009 playoffs.

He also mentioned Kyle Wilson, New York’s former first-round pick, as a reason to make the switch, which doesn’t make a ton of sense. Sure, Wilson improved upon a dreadful rookie campaign, but he’s best suited as a nickel corner at this point, not someone who’d be lining up opposite Darrelle Revis — an unenviable task.

Coach Rex Ryan loves to tinker with his defense, so there’s still a good chance Cromartie will be seeing some time at safety next season. Though, a permanent change to the depth chart doesn’t appear to be in the plans just yet.
