Comments on the Carolina Panthers by the AP Pro32 panel (ranking in parentheses): CAROLINA PANTHERS (20) Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 14): Should I say Cam-olina Panthers? 2011 NFL Offensive Rookie of Year Cam Newton is just scratching surface of how good a quarterback he can become. Bob Glauber (Newsday, 18: Sophomore slump for Cam Newton? He's about to find out. Would help this kid if his defense plays the run even moderately better. Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 14): Blessed with powerful line in front of dynamic Cam Newton. John Lynch (Fox Sports, 16): Cam Newton is even better in Year 2 and defense that struggled mightily in 2012 gets some help from Jon Beason, Thomas Davis and rookie LB Luke Kuechly. Consistent pass rush must emerge to become a force as defense and as team. Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 18): With Cam Newton, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart and now Mike Tolbert, Panthers should have best rushing attack in NFL. Cris Collinsworth (NBC Sports, 19): Cam Newton was stunning last year. Defense needs help. Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 20): If Cam Newton takes another step, and if defense makes strides, Panthers will be far from an easy out. Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 22): Panthers' offense will not suffer from second-year setback by Cam Newton, but can defense come through? Still questions at defensive tackle and in secondary. Chris Berman (ESPN, 22): Year 2 of Cam Newton like looking forward to Christmas. Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 23): Still third-best team in its division. Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 25): Cam Newton is special but the D is ordinary. --- Online: http://bigstory.ap.org/NFL-Pro32 and http://twitter.com/AP-NFL

Cam Newton will not Slump but Excel in 2012

Cam Newton exceeded all expectations last year, especially mine. Coming out of Auburn I was not expecting Cam Newton to be able to adapt to the NFL game. Watching his interview with Coach John Gruden, when he could not name a single play, I thought he was going to fail. I have no problem admitting I was wrong. Cam Newton exploded onto the scene and became a superstar in the...

Cam Newton is everywhere. If he's not flying through your television set on ''Cam's Night Out'' hawking Under Armour gear or sucking down Gatorade and ''Winning the Fifth Quarter,'' chances are you've seen the 23-year-old quarterback featured prominently by the NFL in advertisements for its preseason games. He's been on the intro...

Panthers DT Edwards back, ready to contribute

Defensive tackle Ron Edwards arrived at Carolina Panthers training camp with one thing on his mind: ''I just wanted to hit something.'' You can't blame him. Edwards' first season in Carolina lasted all of about two-and-a-half hours. He tore his triceps in Carolina's first training camp practice last summer. The Panthers quickly placed him on injured...

Competition tight for Panthers WR spots

SPARTANBURG, SC -- To say there's plenty of competition in the Carolina Panthers' training camp at wide receiver would be an understatement. Holdovers such as Brandon LaFell, Armanti Edwards, David Gettis, Darvin Adams and Kealoha Pilares are vying to make the team in some cases and to raise their performance to possibly complement star veteran Steve Smith in another. Newcomers...

Panthers move on from Otah

The Panthers are still waiting to see if their trade of former first-round pick Jeff Otah to the Jets goes through, but they've clearly moved on without him. If Otah doesn't pass the Jets physical by Tuesday's deadline, he'd revert to the Panthers, but they think there's enough interest league-wide that they can move him elsewhere if need be. The Panthers got...

NFL Division Breakdown Series: NFC East

Written By: Kyle Newton (@KNewt22) The NFC East is a beast of a division. Every team is solid, including the Redskins. You have the defending Super Bowl Champions in the Giants.
