The Cleveland Browns have had six different opening day quarterbacks the last six years. Number seven could be on the way. A year after a passer was taken in the first round, the Browns appear poised to again go through the ritual of search and find at the sports most important position. Though theyve not ruled Brandon Weeden out, new coach Rob Chudzinski and Player Personnel Director Mike Lombardi also have said nothing to support their belief in him. And based on Lombardis words as an analyst, Weeden might want to start making other plans. At this point, the reported December rumor from the Boston Globe that Lombardi would trade for New England backup Ryan Mallett has to be given credence. The Browns havent commented, but given the way they hired Lombardi after dismissing his hire, and given the way they said things came together on his hire in the past week to 10 days after it had been reported for months well anything seems possible. Especially a rumor that might link Lombardi...

  • I am a pre Modell Browns fan. We didn't think in terms of a good team. We thought in terms of a dominating team. Much of the recent commentary indicates to me that the current fans (post expansion) have come to accept mediocrity. I am no fan of Mike Lombardi (especially with the shenanigans that went on with the Raiders) but when he critiques the selection of Joe Haden I have to think "Is Joe Haden the best CB in the league?" Answer - NO. He may be the best CB on the Browns but he could improve in many areas. The Browns draft has also been criticised (not by Lombardi to my knowledge) for taking a running bsck with the #3 pick when there were so many good running backs available. This was forgivable because the team really needed a star. There are now rumors linking Lombardi to Ryan Mallett via Bill Belichik. Mallett was being considered for the #1 pick by the Panthers before he fell off of the wagon. The Panthers then selected Cam Newton. If Lombardi can get Mallett (assuming he's clean enough and stays that way) without giving up the chance to get Dee Milliner (completes the Joe Haden picture) all will be forgiven as far as I'm concerned.
