Flash back to the press conference that announced the firing of Tony Sparano.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland said all the right things. They provided reason for excitement. They talked big. They thought big.
Finally, the Dolphins were going to land that big-name coach to satisfy the fan base.
Remember that?
It’s kind of hard to now with the way the coaching search has shaped. The Dolphins are down to three finalists, all assistants with no head-coaching experience. Todd Bowles, Joe Philbin and Mike McCoy are good at what they do, but surely won’t cause an increase in ticket-sales next season.
It leaves the question: Are the Dolphins any better off than if they gave Sparano one more season?
Yes, Sparano endured three straight losing seasons. Yes, his offenses produced more field goals than most basketball teams (with the exception of the San Antonio Spurs last night in the third quarter against the Miami).
But at least with Sparano this team ...
