I have to say I’m not that surprised that Arian Foster lost to Jamaal Charles for the FedEx Ground Player of the Year Award. Simply put, awards based off a fan vote are strictly popularity contests. So it’s also not a surprise that Aaron Rodgers beat out Tom Brady for the FedEx Air Player of the Year Award.
Charles may have had a higher yards per carry average (6.4 ypc versus Foster’s 4.9 ypc), but let me draw it up for you. Charles is not Kansas City’s every down back because he splits a lot of carries with Thomas Jones. He was almost always running to the outside when he was given the ball. Foster on the other hand had most of his production between the tackles.
When it’s 3rd down and goal from the 2 yard line, Charles is not carrying the ball. That duty is reserved for Thomas Jones. Foster, however, will be carrying the ball for either that or similar situations. So it’s no surprise that Foster had 16 rushing touchdowns compared to a minuscule 5 by Charles. Foster finished the season leading the NFL in rushing with 1,616 yards on 327 carries, 66 of which were in the red zone. Charles had 1,467 rushing yards on 230 attempts with only 20 of those being in the red zone.
And for you fantasy football nuts, Arian Foster finished the season with 325.8 points versus 237.5 by Jamaal Charles on NFL.com.
