Earlier this offseason the Cardinals released Kevin Kolb and were looking to find a quarterback with some veteran leadership. Earlier today the Cardinals found their man in Carson Palmer. Arizona gets Palmer and the Oakland Raiders get some draft picks for this year and 2014.
Sources are saying that Palmer’s contract is for two years and is worth $16 million. The contract does allow the Cardinals to opt out of the deal if Carson doesn’t live up to Arizona’s expectations. The Cardinals look to send their second of their sixth-round picks to Oakland and Arizona will get Oakland’s seventh-round pick. Plus Oakland can receive a conditional seventh-round pick in next year’s draft if Palmer is the starter for 13 games this season.
Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said, “This was a no-brainer. When we learned that he would be available via trade and that we had a shot at getting him, we were aggressive. We went out there, we put our best foot forward and made sure that we got the deal done. It dragged on a little over the weekend but this morning we made sure we pushed it over the goal line and got it done.”
Oakland Raiders general manager voiced his praise for Palmer in regards to his time with the Raiders. He told reporters, “We’d like to thank Carson Palmer for his services over the past two seasons and we wish him well with the Cardinals.”
When Palmer was asked if he had anything left in the tank he replied, “I’ve only got a couple of shots left. I’ve been in this league for a long time. It’s nothing personal, it’s not statistical, it’s about trying to win a championship.”
There will be no quarterback controversy in Arizona as head coach Bruce Arians said, “I’m here to introduce our starting quarterback and put it to bed and I’m really happy about it.”
Palmer will have a great target in Larry Fitzgerald and hopes to pull a Kurt Warner in hopes of having a winning season. It will be tough in the NFC West as he will face the 49ers and Seahawks twice. Last year Palmer threw for 4,018 yards with 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Even with those numbers the Raiders only won 4 games. Carson and Arizona are hoping for better results.
