While it’s easy to forget now, it was just seven years ago that the biggest story in the lead-up to Super Bowl XL was the race of the head coaches Lovie Smith and Jim Caldwell. The pair were the first African-American coaches to ever go head-to-head with the Vince Lombardi Trophy on the line, and it was all anyone seemed to talk about in the days prior to kick-off. Thankfully though, that kind of conversation has seemed to slow down of late, specifically in college football. And while there will always be some issues when race is involved (like the one surrounding Jon Embree at Colorado in November), this bowl season has seen more minority coaches win big games than ever before. And thankfully, all anyone seems to be talking about is the quality of coaching on the sidelines, rather than the skin-tone of the men calling the plays.     To see how far things have come, all one needs to do is look at Friday night’s Cotton Bowl, and Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin in spe...

Chicago Bears: Lovie Smith Had to Go as Head Coach

The long overdue firing of Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith following the team's fifth missed postseason in the last six years has sparked some intense reactions from both players and fans alike. It's no secret that the mild-mannered Smith earned a reputation as a "player's coach" and gained the respect and support from his locker room over his nine year...

With Smith gone, a Bears era ends

We look back at the nine-year run of former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, the team’s most successful coach since Mike Ditka.

Chicago Bears to Interview Canadian Football League’s Marc Trestman for Head Coaching Vacancy

The Chicago Bears are apparently taking an out-of-the-box approach to the post-Lovie Smith era. Not one to limit themselves to the United States in an attempt to fill their head coaching vacancy, the Bears are set to interview Marc Trestman for the position, who has spent the last five years coaching the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes. Over that period Montreal has...

Ravens advance to divisional championship game

Former Colts coach Jim Caldwell is at peace and feeling refreshed after knocking out the team that kicked him out. After ten years in Indianapolis, the Ravens signed Caldwell to fill the vacant offensive coordinator position in Baltimore. (Ironically, Colts head coach Chuck Pagano was the defensive coordinator for Baltimore a year ago.)In this battle of parity, Caldwell sat in the...

Kicking it with Chicago’s tin man on Michigan Avenue

We head back down to Michigan Avenue and kick it with Chicago’s number one street performer, the Tin Man. We also let Cheeto our dancing cat do his thing and ask some people about Lovie Smith getting fired by the Bears. Here’s another edition of Minute on Michigan. We are open to suggestions for what you’d like to see us ask people on the streets. Holla to rob@baconsports...

Q&A about Lovie Smith

Here is Brett Solesky from  Midway Illustrated -the Bears website on bloguin- to give us the lowdown on Lovie Smith. 1) Tell me the pros and cons of Lovie Smith? The Pros of Lovie Smith are that he's a player's coach in every sense of the cliche.  Smith's players loved him as a coach and as a man.  There was a ton of respect for Smith and not one player has...

Kelly coaching his last Irish game?

This is Notre Dame's dream team. Irish fans have been told for years they couldn't get back to the big game their way, yet here they are in Monday's BCS Championship Game against Alabama. It's all thanks to Brian Kelly. But I've come to one conclusion: Brian Kelly should be the coach of the Chicago Bears. Some people are built for college and some for pros...

Bears Should Put All of Their “Chips” in for Oregon’s Kelly

Strong defense was the calling card of the Bears in the Lovie Smith era. As the old saying goes, defense wins championships, yet defense can only take a team so far. Teams in the modern NFL need an offense that can score at will in order to be successful. The number one and two seeds in the AFC playoffs (Denver and New England) are fourth and first in total offense respectively....
