The assault charges against Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib have been dismissed, the Tampa Bay Times reported Monday based on information provided by Talib's attorney. Talib was scheduled to stand trial on June 25 on charges of assault with a deadly weapon in Dallas County, Tex. Police said that in March 2011 Talib pistol-whipped and fired shots at Shannon Billings, the boyfriend of Talib's sister, who resides in Garland, Tex. Billings is currently jailed as a repeat sex offender. Frank Perez, Talib's attorney, told the Times that prosecutors did not believe their chief witness would be credible. The dismissal of the second-degree felony will allow Talib to begin the 2012 NFL season under new coach Greg Schiano with no legal issues. Talib has started all 39 games in which he has played for the Bucs the past three seasons, including 13 starts in 2011. He has 17 career interceptions in his four NFL seasons.
