Satisfied with the blockers that the Redskins had on the team, head coach Mike Shanahan sought free agent tight end Dominique Byrd to be a playmaker on offense.
“He’s an athlete,” he said yesterday after practice. “We thought he was the best pass catching tight end out there. He did a good job today in practice–he impressed me today.”
And Byrd has the resume to back it up. In college, he had nearly 1,000 career receiving yards, and playing on a national championship squad at USC that featured three other future NFL receivers. At the NFL Combine, Byrd balanced size and speed, with a 6-3, 255-lb frame, and 4.8 speed.
