The Atlanta Falcons season has been a giant horse pill to swallow for fans after having so much success last season and going 13-3 during the regular season. This year, the team is 2-7 and will be lucky if they have an opportunity to win another game this season and go 3-13…the opposite of the 2012 season. The only two wins the Falcons have had this season so far came from the St. Louis Rams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. (1-8) Hopefully the team can some way pull a rabbit out of a magicians hat when they play the division rival again this time. But this time the game will be in Tampa Bay and since the match up in week 7, Tampa has won one and ended their winless streak against the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night and the Bucs have no intention of trying to end that streak so soon. The game will air at 1:00 PM ET on FOX. The Falcons biggest problem is the running game, which ranks dead last in the league averaging 63 yards a game. When Steven Jackson came back from his injury, everyone thought that things would go smoother than the previous weeks but everyone was wrong. Steven Jackson’s running seems to be forced by the coaches and its not working, he has yet to average over five yards a carry since his return. I’m not blaming him, but I believe the offensive coordinators should switch up the running backs more so the Falcons can move down the field since they opt to run the ball so much. Against the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals it seems the Falcons offense was more successful with Jaquizz Rodgers in the backfield. But something that I shall never see again in my football watching days is Matt Ryan being the leading rusher. Against the Arizona Cardinals, Matt Ryan ran for a first down (13 yards) and that was the most rushing yards the Falcons had that day. That was like a sick joke and it was so horrifying to watch. What’s worse to think about is how did that happen. It becomes unbearably hard to consider the fact that only Matt Ryan found a hole to run through that day, and no other running backs could make a way. But that’s not the worst of the woes, the offensive line also won’t protect their quarterback long enough for him to make a smart decision like he normally does before throwing and its costing them big time. The only good thing to mention here is that the Falcons have signed former New York Giants offensive lineman Sean Locklear. Thank you God, maybe one now one person could be blocking for Matt Ryan. On the defensive side of the ball, CB Desmond Trufant has been named the top NFC rookie corner and is one of the top in the league.
