Atlanta Falcons general manager, Thomas Dimitroff saw how close the team came to advancing to the Super Bowl. The Falcons had a halftime lead and looked like they were playing at a Super Bowl caliber level. The 49ers comeback ended the team’s hopes of punching their ticket to New Orleans. One major storyline in the Falcons season this year was the retirement of their tight end Tony Gonzalez. During the NFL season, Tony said that he was 95 percent sure he would retire after this season. An emotional Gonzalez did tell reporters after the game that he is looking to still retire even though the Falcons came so close to the Super Bowl. Even with Tony’s retirement looking like it will happen, Thomas Dimitroff is campaigning for Gonzalez to come back and play for Atlanta. Thomas told ESPN.com reporter, “A guy who is 36 catching 100-plus balls, it just doesn’t seem like it’s time for him to move on.  Tony’s a man and he’s got to make his own decision. Suffice it to say that it’s not going to be an easy decision for him one way or another because he knows that he still has fuel in the tank and it’s very legitimate fuel in the tank.” On a time frame for Gonzalez to make a decision, Dimitroff told reporters, “We don’t have a deadline at all. But let’s face it that it’s important for us to know sooner rather than later because we have to move forward on our entire decision making.” The Falcons had the number one seed in the NFC playoffs this year and Tony Gonzalez was a major factor in the team’s offensive production. The Falcons do have Julio Jones and Roddy White who both are number one wide receivers, but if you can have a first ballot hall of famer at the tight end position they would always welcome that.
