The Atlanta Falcons wasted no time in getting their player in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft, as the team made a trade with the St. Louis Rams to select Washington CB Desmond Trufant. The trade, which saw Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff come to terms on a deal with former Falcons director of player personnel-turned Rams general manager Les Snead, saw Atlanta move up eight spots from 30th overall to 22nd and acquire a 7th rounder for 2015 while sending away a third and sixth round pick to St. Louis. The move up in the Draft gave Atlanta the chance to bring in Trufant, who had 195 tackles along with 6 INTs and 3 forced fumbles in his four seasons with the Huskies. Trufant fills a hole that appears to have been the biggest for the Falcons going into this offseason due to the departures of Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson, and although the team still has several holes to fill (namely defensive end and middle linebacker), this is definitely a good use of Atlanta’s only pick in the first round. No more big hits for Atlanta via Robinson? No problem Not familiar with Trufant? Here are some of the highlights of Trufant’s college career and what the Falcons can expect from him in the future: Measurables: Height 6’0” Weight 186 lbs 40 Yard Dash 4.45 (.05 off of fastest dash by CB) Vertical Jump Trufant did not participate College Awards: 2012 First Team All-Pac-12, second team All-American (FoxSportsNext.com), started first 10 games of the 2012 season and every game since early in his freshman year Pre-Draft Rankings: ESPN 32nd overall (2nd CB) Scouts Inc 28th overall (3rd CB) CBSports 23rd overall (3rd CB) It Runs in the Family: Desmond is the third of three Trufant brothers to play cornerback in the NFL: Marcus Trufant played ten seasons for his hometown Seahawks (2003-2012), while Isaiah Trufant has spent three seasons in the league with stints with the Eagles and the Jets. Highlights With the cornerback quandary at least partially solved with the addition of Trufant, the question now is what position the Falcons will target on Day 2 of the draft. Although it is unclear who will still be available when the #60 overall pick comes around Friday night, it is a safe assumption that the focus for the Falcons will continue to be on defense, more than likely at defensive end. Keep an eye out for the Falcons to look long and hard at SMU’s Margus Hunt, Texas A&M’s Damontre Moore, and Texas’s Alex Okafor. Did the Falcons get it right with selecting Trufant?
